The Federal Government’s announcement today that they will explore a pathway aimed at delivering electricity supply to Tomago Aluminium from 2028 is great news. Importantly, we see a plan which involves both Federal and State Governments working together with Australian industry, committing to the hard work needed to pursue the best outcome for Tomago and its workforce 👷‍♂️👷‍♀️, the wider Hunter community, and the people of NSW who rely on the smelter’s vital role in keeping our grid stable and reliable⚡.

🎉 Celebrating 70 years of Australian aluminium innovation! 🎉
In 1944, the Australian Aluminium Production Commission (AAPC) was created under the Australian Aluminium Industry Act – setting the stage for something remarkable. Tasmania was chosen as the site for Australia’s and the Southern Hemisphere’s first aluminium smelter and alumina refinery.
On 23 September 1955, the Bell Bay Aluminium smelter began operations – reducing Australia’s reliance on imported aluminium and setting a new standard for innovation and industry.
Seven decades on, Bell Bay Aluminium is more than a workplace. It’s a community. Generations of families have contributed their skills, innovation and pride to the site, building on a legacy of collaboration and investment.
Happy 70th Birthday to everyone who has been part of this journey – directly or indirectly. Here’s to the future! 🎂✨
