Today, the 1st of December marks the first official day of Summer!

While it may not feel like summer just yet in some parts of the Southern Hemisphere, the start of a new planting season is a reminder that warmer weather is on its way, and that there is much to look forward to in the months ahead.

In Australia, summer also marks a crucial time for the agricultural industry. While some are in the full swing of harvesting, others are getting ready to start sowing new crops this season. Farmers are preparing to plant crops like Maize, Sorghum, Brassicas, Lucene (Alfalfa, as it is known outside of Australia), and Canola - which means lots of farmers are going to be busy around the country.

This season also is the start of the El Nino summer. During an El Nino event, warmer ocean temperatures in the Pacific lead to changes in wind patterns and rainfall, which has potential impacts on weather patterns and agricultural productivity. In addition to the risk of bushfires, El Nino can also cause droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events in different parts of the world.

We wish our farmers the best of luck during both harvesting and sowing this Summer!

Wrapping up on the Asian Seed Congress 2023 we ended the week with a tour of GTE Technology equipment at the Barenbrug Group facility at Darfield. Followed by a post-Congress tour to the Vineyard in Rossendale.

Throughout the conference, we engaged in thought-provoking discussions and gained valuable insights into the latest developments in the industry. The various keynote speakers have shared their experiences and expertise, leaving us feeling inspired and motivated to push the boundaries even further with seed technology.

Many thanks again to New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association and The Asia and Pacific Seed Alliance for hosting this event for us. As well as Darren Driscoll, Biraja Prasad Mohapatra and Krishnendu Mondal for attending on behalf of Centor Oceania and Centor India Agri Pvt Ltd .

We look forward to seeing you all again in China in 2024 for the next Asian Seed Congress!

🚜 🌽It’s Maize Day! 🌽 🚜

Today we are taking a moment to look at this crop that is a staple food for millions of people around the world and is also a valuable source of feed for livestock.

According to WHO, Mazie is among the top 5 consumed vegetables in the world – as well as the highest yielding staple crop with over 1.4 billion metric tons produced worldwide in 2021/2022!

That makes Maize a very important crop to continue feeding the world’s growing population. Stressors such as drought, heat, and pests all affect the germination probabilities of this crop.

This is why we provide polymers and powders that protect this important crop of our food chain, and we continue to develop innovative polymer coatings that can be applied to maize seeds!

Day 4 of the Asian Seed Congress 2023 - and the second last day before we return across the pond to Australia! 🇦🇺

Apart from the informative seminars and meetings, we have also enjoyed networking with our peers from different parts of the world. It’s been fascinating to learn about their cultures and how they approach the challenges facing the seed industry in their respective countries.

Including having the pleasure of being entertained by an array of shows and events which included a spectacular traditional Māori performance - as seen here.

We are now officially at the halfway mark of the conference.

Throughout the conference, we have seen a lot of innovative and exciting ideas being presented. It’s been amazing to see the passion and dedication of all the attendees towards the advancement of the seed industry in the Asia-Pacific.

As we move into the second half of the conference, we look forward to more engaging discussions with new and old faces.

We are looking forward to a day filled with informative sessions, and engaging discussions from a diverse range of professionals, including seed breeders, growers, distributors, and researchers. This is a great opportunity to learn about the latest developments in seed technology and enhancement, as well as new crop varieties that are being introduced to the market.

Centor Oceania is thrilled to be part of this exciting event, as we continue to innovate and develop new seed technologies that help farmers around the world improve crop yields and meet the growing demand for food.

Australia is lucky to have such a diverse and high-quality fibre and food market. Today we celebrate National Ag Day, run by the National Farmers' Federation to bring attention to the people that sustain our food chain.

As, NFF president Fiona Simson said, “We have an El Nino on our hands and some farmers are facing a very poor outlook for the season ahead. That being said, Aussie farmers work hard to make sure the impact of dry times is barely felt at dinner tables.”

Facing unpredictable weather conditions in the Australian climate is no easy feat, so take today to thank a farmer in your life, and take some time to learn about how you can support the Australian-grown food market.
