❄️ THE FIRST BURST OF WINTER WEATHER TO AFFECT VICTORIA FROM WEDNESDAY ONWARDS

A strong cold front will cross Victoria during Wednesday and Thursday with a very cold polar airmass in its wake.

🔵 WEDNESDAY:

Cold temperatures with gusty winds, small hail and showers will extend from the west on Wednesday afternoon, with NW’ly winds shifting SW’ly from the west with gusts of 50-70km/h.

Latest rainfall guidance indicates rainfall totals of 1-10mm, with locally higher falls of 10-20mm over the southwest and central parts.

🔵 THURSDAY:

Cold and gusty SW’ly winds will continue on Thursday, with locally damaging wind gusts in the far east coast with showers, rain, small hail and low-level snow.

SW’y wind gusts of 60-80km/h locally reaching 90-100km/h in Gippsland.

Widespread showers are forecast across the state, tending to rain in southern and mountain areas, with rainfall totals of 5-15mm, local falls of 30 mm-50 mm.

The snow level is forecast to drop to 700 metres throughout the day.

Cold-air thunderstorms will be possible near the southwest and central coasts.

Elevated sea levels are possible along the Port Phillip and Gippsland coasts, but current guidance suggests they remain below warning thresholds.

🔵 FRIDAY:

On Friday, cold, gusty SW’ly winds will continue, with showers. SW’ly winds gusts of 50-70km/h, locally 80km/h, toward the central and Gippsland coasts.

The image below is the 500MB temperature forecast, illustrating the pool of cold air impacting the state. The 500 mb (millibar) level is generally found at an altitude of approximately 18,000 feet (about 5,500 to 5,900 meters) above sea level, representing the middle of the atmosphere where half the air mass lies above and half below.

Please note that the temperatures on this forecast are not indicative of expected surface temperatures. Melbourne is forecast to reach a maximum of 12°C on Thursday.
