China’s electric mining equipment push is opening a clear divide between the Pilbara’s largest iron ore producers.

As reported by AFR, Fortescue is moving quickly with Chinese manufacturer XCMG, betting that China’s manufacturing speed can bring battery-powered heavy equipment into full-scale mining faster than traditional suppliers.

The partnership extends well beyond prototypes. XCMG is expected to supply 150 to 200 battery-electric haul trucks between 2028 and 2030, representing up to half of Fortescue’s planned fleet of 300 to 400 zero-emission 240-tonne trucks.

That follows a separate contract worth more than US$400 million for over 100 electric loaders, dozers, water carts, graders and prime movers. The first machines are scheduled to enter Pilbara testing from 2026.

Fortescue’s approach contrasts with BHP and Rio Tinto. The two miners are jointly testing Caterpillar 793 XE battery-electric haul trucks at BHP’s Jimblebar operation, but remain cautious about charging, productivity and fleet-scale deployment.

BHP has also ordered 62 new diesel haul trucks for Jimblebar, a fleet expected to remain active into the late 2030s.

XCMG wants to repeat the disruption Chinese brands brought to the global car market. Its strongest argument is scale: 100 autonomous electric mining trucks already operate together at China’s Yimin coal mine.

The Pilbara will now test whether that Chinese advantage transfers to Australia’s tougher, continuous iron ore operations without slowing ore movements down.
