Materials used for ground structure is important in solar ground systems.
A general method of ground footing is called post-anchor, because most of the ground systems are installed on soils (or earth). To accomplish a post-anchor footing, a ground hole need to be dug first. Then the ground stand (or leg) will be positioned inside the hole, and afterwards, concrete will be filled into the hole.
Different materials used on ground legs can affect the lifespan of a ground mounting. There are normally two kinds of materials on the market: steel and aluminium, respectively.
For Aluminium, it is light and more accurate on its dimensions because of the manufacturing process. However, when in contact with plastic concrete during the concrete filling process, Aluminium will corrode significantly. Thus the aluminium used on ground mounting frame should be avoided.
Steel, on the other hand, is heavy. But it has great corrosion resistance compared with aluminium when being contacted with the concrete. Therefore, steel is recommended for ground frames.

Earthing chips are essential during solar installation, because the anodised aluminium extrusions are non-conductive.
There are normally 2 kinds of earthing chips on Australian market.
The first one is separated from the racking system, and installers need to bring earthing chips on the roof and put them down under the PV panels during installation.
The second one is built inside the mid-clamp. Installers do not need to bring any earthing chips on the roof, and by simply fastening the mid-clamp, the earthing is finished itself.
Thus the second one will surely save a lot of time and effort during installation.

Corrugated roof is tough for solar installers. The Tin bracket cannot just stand well on such rooves. However, Microsolar System has its own solutions. Check our footings on the corrugated roof, and it's called TB-1. It can hugely increase the quality of the whole solar system.

Aluminium Anodising
Anodised aluminium can be found widely on the market. Anodising increases the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the aluminium surface, and therefore increases corrosion and wear resistance. Anodising can also change the colour on the surface such as the green layer on the Ipod.
However, the anodic layer is non-conductive, which explains why solar racking system needs earthing jobs. Anodised aluminium extrusions can be expensive, but it is required compulsorily in Australia. Installers must be responsible for checking whether the rails are anodised or not, otherwise it can lead to installation failure.
It is hard to tell whether racking rails have been anodised or not from the way they look. The best way to do this is to use electricity indicators on the rail, if there is current, then the rail is not anodised. Please be ware that anodised rails are non-conductive, and some companies are actually selling non-anodised racking rails on the market.

Facts about screws being used in solar racking system:
There are currently two kinds of screw coatings on the market: Zinc Plated screws and Galvanised screws, respectively.
1. Zinc Plated screws have a thin protective coating and aren’t as hard wearing as other kinds of screws, so they’re used primarily for indoor use or protected undercover outdoor areas.
2. Galvanised screws have a tougher coating than zinc plate screws and are therefore great for outdoor use, or for use in areas exposed to the elements. You can get galvanised screws in a few different grades, ranging from outdoor to severe corrosive areas.
Therefore, the screws used for solar racking system should be galvanised. If you notice the screws you buy are zinc-plated, that's probably for budget considerations, but not legal.
The difference you can tell from the look of the screws are also obvious: Zinc-plated screws tend to be very shiny and well-polished, while galvanized screws are normally dark and rough as shown in the picture.

Australian solar industry has its own standards, just like us living in the modern society following basic rules.
For solar racking system, it follows the Australian building standard, because it is a basic truss structure system. The joints and fasteners are known as the most important parts within a structure.
According to Australian Standard 1170.1.2 : Fasteners constructed within building structures must use stainless steel or galvanised carbon steel as materials. Therefore, it is important to check the fasteners we use (bolts and nuts) are both stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel.
Australian standards should be strictly followed for the sake of solar customers. It is the solar companies and installers' responsibility to ensure that they provide their customers with the right products, not just according to price, but also considering the Australian standards. 🧐🧐🧐
