We were pleasantly surprised by the turnout, especially with the footy finals happening! Apparently nothing can stop the grind… not even Freo. 🥀

Ever wanted to work on a real engineering project while developing practical skills outside the classroom? Well the time is now!

The UWA Grand Challenges program gathers and encourages students to work on projects tackling real-world problems. Over 7 weeks, you'll work as part of a team to develop and improve a solution while gaining hands-on experience along the way.

This semester, UWA Robotics Club x UWA Makers are taking on the 3D Filament Recycler Project!

The challenge:

3D printing is incredibly useful, but failed prints, supports and prototypes can leave behind a lot of plastic waste. Rather than sending that material straight to the bin, we aim to develop a system that can recycle 3D-printing waste back into usable filament to then recycle into other projects, helping make 3D printing more sustainable and environmentally conscious.

Over the 7-week project, you'll get the chance to work

with:

- Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
- Embedded Programming
- PID Control
- Process Automation
- Prototyping & hands-on engineering

You don't need to already be an expert, the project is an opportunity to learn, build and develop these skills as you go.

Whether you're interested in robotics, sustainability, 3D printing, programming, mechanical design, or just want some practical project experience, we'd love to have you involved.

ROBOLYMPICS: CRoC x URC Advanced Robotics Hackathon

🤖 🏆 ROBOLYMPICS! 🏆 🤖

Curtin Robotics Club x UWA Robotics Club are teaming up for ROBOLYMPICS, a two-day advanced robotics hackathon where teams will race against the clock to design, build and program a robot capable of taking on a series of _olympic_ challenges.

Work together to tackle engineering problems, put your mechanical, electrical and programming skills to the test, and compete against other teams for prizes and bragging rights.

📍 EZONE North, UWA
⏰ 2 day event! 9AM -5PM Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September

EEEWA, BES and URC are running a pregame workshop covering the digital logic basics you’ll need before getting properly stuck into the unit.

Wednesday 5 August
6:00–7:30 pm
EZONE North [210] Learning Studio

We’ll run through bits, logic gates, Boolean logic, binary, muxes, clocks and memory, with plenty of examples along the way.

No prior knowledge needed, just show up!

Venture UWA is teaming up with United Exports to run Hack the Harvest, a hackathon that’s nothing like the ones you’ve probably heard about before.

Using a human centred design thinking approach students will head out to a working blueberry farm, meet the people who run it, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how one of Australia’s leading blueberry businesses operates. You’ll hear about the real challenges the farm is facing, then spend the weekend turning those challenges into ideas and solutions alongside students from all kinds of degrees.

There’ll be mentors from start-ups, academia, agriculture and industry helping teams along the way, and students will get to experiment with AI, drones, robotics and other emerging tech before pitching their ideas on the final night.

Everything is covered, including transport from UWA, all meals across the weekend, mentors, workshops and plenty of opportunities to meet founders, industry leaders and other students.

Prize: shared prize pool of $5000
Application deadline: Tuesday 11th August
Event dates: Friday 14th - Monday 17th August
