Smart infrastructure starts with smart design.

New lighting shouldn't mean extensive civil works, costly underground cabling and the burden of ongoing electricity costs.

Leadsun solar street lights are designed as independent, off-grid systems, generating and storing energy free from the sun to power a bright, energy efficient LED luminaire at night. This simplifies installation, reduces site disruption and removes the need for connection to the electricity grid altogether.

The result is faster, more affordable lighting for roads, streets, pathways, car parks and public spaces.

Melton City Council has delivered a major safety upgrade at the intersection of Boundary Road, Troups Road South and Davis Road with a new roundabout and Leadsun solar road lighting.

Designed to improve visibility and traffic flow, the project demonstrates how councils can upgrade critical infrastructure without the delays and costs often associated with grid-connected lighting.

At the new Western Sydney International Airport, before there was a terminal, and before there were runway, there was a construction site that needed to operate safely after dark.

In 2022, Leadsun supplied 65 portable solar lighting systems to illuminate access roads and parking areas during construction. The lighting was deployed without trenching or cabling, and provided a flexible solution that could move as the project evolved.

Now, with Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport set to open in just a few months, we can reflect on our small, but not insignificant contribution to Australia's newest airport.

Celebrating Global Maintenance Day!

One of the advantages of solar street lighting is that rainfall does most of the work when it comes to keeping panels clean and operating efficiently. In addition, most Leadsun luminaires have a 3000K colour temperature, which is generally less attractive to insects than cooler white light. This means less spiders and less cobwebs which can attract dust & dirt, as well as impair performance. Our solar street lights can also be monitored remotely with wireless SMART technology, so any performance issues can be quickly and easily identified.

While solar lighting is designed to minimise maintenance, periodic inspections are still a good idea to help ensure longevity and optimal performance.

On Global Maintenance Day, we recognise the vital role preventative maintenance plays in keeping our communities, infrastructure and public spaces operating safely.

If you need support maintaining your Leadsun lighting assets, our team is here to help.

Our work isn't always about roads, pathways and pedestrian crossings! A lot of our lighting projects are ultimately about creating welcoming places where communities want to gather.

At Bracken Ridge Library, Brisbane City Council partnered with Firefly Lighting and Leadsun to transform a popular community green space with 120 solar-powered festoon lights, creating a safe, welcoming atmosphere for events, festivals and everyday use. Powered by a single 400W solar engine, the installation eliminated the need for temporary lighting setups, heavy equipment and ongoing maintenance while delivering reliable illumination all year-round.

It's a great example of how solar lighting can enhance safety, improve amenity and bring public spaces to life after dark.

Raised crossings are often overlooked when it comes to lighting compliance, yet they can present the same visibility and safety risks as zebra crossings.

With the recent changes to AS/NZS compliance requirements, the shift to LED lighting, and growing concerns around non-compliance, assessing raised crossings is now more important than ever.

Get in touch with our team to discuss an audit of your crossings. We also have some handy online tools available on our website to get you started.

Traditional grid-connected lighting projects often come with hidden costs and long delivery times.

Trenching. Civil works. Grid connection delays. Then there's the ongoing electricity costs once it's all been installed.

With off-grid solar lighting, many of those major cost drivers are eliminated entirely. No trenching, no delays connecting to the electricity grid, and faster installation.

A typical grid-connected pedestrian crossing lighting solution costs between $45,000–$75,000 and takes 12–18 months to deliver. In comparison, an equivalent Leadsun solar lighting solution significantly reduces both time and cost and minimises disruption to road users.

For councils under pressure to improve safety quickly, solar is fast becoming the preferred choice ☀️

A great afternoon of discussion at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Street Lighting & Smart Controls (SLSC) webinar on relighting pedestrian crossings.

Our own Stuart Templeman joined fellow industry experts to unpack the latest changes to AS/NZS 1158.4 pedestrian crossing compliance requirements, LED upgrade pathways and how smart lighting technologies are helping councils, consultants and asset managers improve safety, visibility and performance.

Great to be part of the conversation and share our insights and expertise on such an important issue right now.

ABC News reported this week that copper wire theft is becoming an increasingly costly and disruptive problem in Australia.

"Councils across Queensland are bearing the cost of millions of dollars in copper theft, with authorities warning the crime is also putting lives at risk and disrupting essential infrastructure across the state."

Solar street lights are off-grid, so they don't require any cabling, which means there is no copper wire to steal.

As councils look for more resilient infrastructure solutions, solar lighting continues to offer advantages beyond affordability, sustainability and easy installation.
