A fantastic afternoon session at the SWQ Branch Conference Roads Forum delivered practical insights across sealing, compliance, and emerging technologies shaping the sector.

Cameron Ives (TMR) opened with innovations in sprayed seals and asphalt in the Darling Downs, followed by Sarah Hausler (McCullough Robertson), who provided valuable perspective on road licensing in Queensland. Delegates then heard from David Bell (Proterra Group) and Brian Wood (Survai Systems) on how LiDAR is enhancing the accuracy of road condition assessments.

A big thank you to our morning and afternoon tea sponsor, Redfrost, for keeping delegates refreshed throughout the day!

MEDIA RELEASE: IPWEA Queensland and Northern Territory appoints Jesper Jensen as Chief Executive Officer

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland and Northern Territory (IPWEA-QNT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jesper Jensen as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Jensen assumes the role following his service as IPWEA-QNT’s Chief Operating Officer and, most recently, Interim CEO, after former CEO Brett Wright announced his decision to step down in May.

Since joining IPWEA-QNT in August 2023 as General Manager, Stakeholder Engagement & Business Development, Mr Jensen has made a significant contribution to the organisation’s growth and success.

He was subsequently promoted to Chief Operating Officer, where he played a key role in strengthening IPWEA-QNT’s technical services, professional development programs and stakeholder engagement.

Mr Jensen is a civil and structural engineer with over 30 years’ experience across local government, consulting, research, technical management, and the building and concrete products manufacturing sector, including 15 years of business management experience in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

During his time with IPWEA-QNT, Mr Jensen has led several major initiatives, including:

• Project manager and Co-author of the Resilient Road Infrastructure Guideline (RRIG) with support from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
• Leading the delivery of IPWEA-QNT’s inaugural Disaster Recovery Forum.
• Modernising the organisation’s professional development programs to better meet the evolving needs of members and the public works engineering sector.
• Driving the delivery of several critical technical resources, including:
• A comprehensive update of the Standard Drawings.
• The publication of the Second Edition of the Lower Order Road Design Guide.
• The launch of the new CAD and Survey Standards.

IPWEA-QNT President Sean Rice welcomed the appointment, highlighting Mr Jensen’s leadership and commitment to the sector.

Mr Rice said, “The Board is delighted to appoint Jesper as CEO. Jesper brings a wealth of practical industry experience and has already made a significant contribution to IPWEA-QNT’s sector-leading technical and professional development offerings. His strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing public works professionals positions him well to lead the organisation into its next phase.”

Mr Rice said the appointment comes at an important time for the organisation.

“As IPWEA-QNT continues to refine its programs and review its service offerings to ensure we meet the future needs of the public works engineering sector, Jesper’s leadership, vision and industry expertise will be invaluable.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank Brett Wright for his leadership and contributions over the past three and a half years and thank all IPWEA-QNT staff for their hard work and support throughout this transition period.”

What a fantastic Optimise event last night at GHD’s Brisbane office, and the perfect way to wrap up our Optimise events for the year! 🎉

A big thank you to everyone who joined us. It was great to see everyone networking, and amazing to welcome some new faces into the community.

At IPWEA‑QNT, we’re proud to support the engineers who deliver and maintain the infrastructure our communities rely on, and events like this are a great reminder of the impact of coming together.

Thank you to our sponsors, NorthLane Consulting Engineers and BPEQ, for making the event possible, and to our speakers, Jeremy Bishop (BPEQ), Simon Driml and Jarrad Fels (GHD) for sharing your insights. And of course, thank you to the SEQ Branch Committee for their ongoing support.

We hope to see you at our upcoming events!

How well do you know rural and remote roads?

During National Road Safety Week, Maranoa Regional Council launched a video series highlighting the realities of regional driving: including fatigue, distractions, changing conditions and long-distance travel.

The launch was attended by the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Brent Mickelberg, Peter Frazer OAM (SARAH Group), and local emergency services and first responders.

Some great work here from the team at Maranoa Regional Council in developing this initiative to help shine a spotlight on the importance of road safety on rural and remote roads.
