🌈 Beautiful Rainbow Alert! 🌈
As environmental scientists, getting out of the office for field work provides a valuable opportunity to experience the beauty—and variability—of the atmosphere.
Out in Melbourne’s industrial heartland this week, Air Environment’s field team was back on the ground delivering real‑time odour surveillance—rain or shine.
The photo captures the reality of the job: a keen sense of smell, high-vis gear, wet conditions, and a rainbow breaking through the rain during today’s late afternoon survey run. Field work doesn’t stop for the weather—and in many cases, these conditions produce the most informative dispersion behaviour.
Using Air Environment’s PlumeMapper app, the team recorded odour observations alongside live meteorological data, enabling precise spatial and temporal mapping of odour plumes as they developed. Each observation contributes to a defensible dataset, linking what is experienced on the ground with what the atmosphere is doing in real time.
This is where field science meets technology—turning real-time odour observations into structured, evidence-based insights that support compliance, investigation, and proactive management.
Rain, wind shifts, and everything in between—captured and mapped.
