🚧 Main Roads has officially moved into its new Metropolitan maintenance depot, in Hazelmere.

The almost 12,000m2 site, is the third major maintenance depot for Main Roads in the Metropolitan region, complementing facilities in Neerabup and Jandakot. The site includes a hardstand, warehouse and office facility, with parking for 🚛 28 maintenance vehicles and 🚗 67 light vehicles. There’s also a 🚿 wash down bay for vehicles and infrastructure for future ⚡ EV charging stations.

About 60 road and bridge maintenance employees will call the new depot home.

✅ The site is expected to facilitate more efficient and timely service of the State’s increased road network management responsibilities, with crews responsible for the delivery of routine maintenance operations, particularly in the Eastern suburbs.

In 1926, Western Australia was experiencing a ‘car boom’ 🚗 which saw the number of vehicles in WA jump from 3,000 in 1921 to 31,000 by 1931.

Main Roads Western Australia 🛣️ was established in June of 1926 when the Main Roads Act 1925 came into effect 📜, and the Main Roads Board was formed to manage and plan a road network to meet the needs of a growing population 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.

Consisting of three members – engineers Edward Tindale and R.J. Anketell and public service administrator George Dibden – the Board had the task of surveying and setting in place a five-year program of works for roads and bridges across Western Australia.

By 1927 the Main Roads Board employed 2700 staff and had established offices in Perth, Bunbury, Geraldton, Northam, Narrogin, Bridgetown, Albany and Kalgoorlie 🏢📍

Our journey would not be complete without the people who helped build our roads.

🚧 Works on the next four Great Northern Highway overtaking lanes between Munjina and Port Hedland are now underway.

The project, due for completion by the end of the year, supports the State Government’s commitment to strengthen the freight network, improving transport efficiency and road safety across the Pilbara.

This major package is jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments to deliver safer outcomes for heavy vehicle drivers and all road users 🚗

🎉 For 100 years, Main Roads Western Australia has proudly contributed to Western Australia’s success – creating jobs, connecting suburbs, towns and cities and growing communities across the State.

Our roads are more than physical infrastructure 🛣️

Our roads carry crops, machinery and freight to ports, essential goods to remote regions, tourists to natural wonders and events and commuters’ home to families.

From 1926 to today’s state-wide network, our roads have evolved alongside our growing State, supporting safer travel, improved connectivity and better mobility for communities across WA 🗺️

As we celebrate our 100 year anniversary, we’re proud to reflect on the journey we’ve shared with Western Australians and look forward to continuing to keep communities connected for generations to come

The Menang Drive and Chester Pass Road Flyover project is making strong progress 🚧

In just five months on site, approximately 50% of the earthworks that will support the new flyover have been completed.

With the cooler autumn weather now upon us, attention had turned to bridgeworks, with footing construction and Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) wall installation underway.

🌉 Bridge works will remain the focus of the project over the winter months, before earthworks resume in the spring.

Upon completion in 2027, the new flyover will complete the Albany Ring Road route, creating a free flowing connection from Chester Pass Road all the way to Albany Port 🚗🚛✨

🚴 🚶 If you’re a regular user of the Mitchell Freeway’s Principal Shared Path (PSP) between Leederville and Northbridge, you’ll notice we’ve recently undertaken important works to improve its surface.

We are pleased to say these works have now been completed, making the journey safer and enhancing the experience for riders and walkers.

The path was widened and resurfaced along two sections, with upgrades completed across two stages. Repairs were also undertaken on the PSP ramp connecting to Leederville Parade, and maintenance items such as critical drainage works and repainting were carried out 🛠️

These types of projects are important to our network, as it ensures we are connecting communities and encouraging multiple active travel modes where possible.

Have you ever come across road workers or traffic controllers on your travels?

They work in busy, high-traffic environments to keep our road network moving often with limited protection and in very vulnerable conditions. With a record number of upgrades underway across WA, you’re likely to see more roadwork sites on your journey.

Here’s how you can help keep everyone safe:

➡️ Follow the signs
Roadwork signage is there to guide you, even if you can’t see workers on site.

➡️ Your speed is our safety
Always follow reduced speed limits. They’re in place to protect you and others from hazards like loose stones, changed road layouts and uneven surfaces.

➡️ Stay alert and follow directions
If traffic controllers are present, follow their instructions.

➡️ Slow down and take care
Every worker on our roads deserves to get home safely.
