🛁 Bathroom Renovation with Asbestos Removal

You wouldn’t know it by looking at older bathrooms, but asbestos can be found in many homes built or renovated before 1990.

In this 1970s home, we safely removed the asbestos containing wall linings, making way for this brand new bathroom. 🛁

Asbestos was commonly used in wet areas like bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, and could be found in walls, flooring, ceilings, splashbacks and even pipe lagging (insulation around pipes).

If your home was built or renovated before 1990, make sure you test for possible asbestos before starting your renovation.

Class A Friable Asbestos Removal - Textured Popcorn (Vermiculite) Ceilings

At this two-storey apartment complex in West Beach, Class A friable asbestos containing textured coating, commonly known as a popcorn ceiling, was identified across the balcony and porch ceilings.

Class A friable asbestos can be easily crumbled and release airborne asbestos fibres when disturbed, strict containment and controlled removal procedures were essential.

Our crews installed 200-micron plastic sheeting onto a purpose-built timber frame, installed negative pressure units and established three-stage decontamination facilities before removal began.

The asbestos containing coating was then safely removed, contained and transported to a licensed EPA waste facility.

The project was completed in accordance with SafeWork SA requirements, with air monitoring, compliance checks and final clearance undertaken by an independent licensed asbestos assessor before the clearance certificate was issued.

⚠️ Got old vinyl or lino flooring? Read this before you touch it! ⚠️

If your home was built or renovated before 1990, that vinyl flooring (or what's underneath it) could contain asbestos.

The tricky part: homes often have layer upon layer of flooring. Rip up the top layer thinking you're in the clear, and the bottom layer could still be asbestos vinyl. Test every layer, right down to the subfloor.

Two types to know:

🔸 Class B (non-friable) – asbestos containing vinyl tiles, Fibres are tightly bound, compressed and not normally released unless disturbed, damaged or badly weathered. If left undisturbed in good condition, the risk are much lower. These types of floor exceeding 10m2 must be removed by a Class B licensed asbestos removalist.

🔴 Class A (friable) – Asbestos Backed Vinyl (ABV) – backing often 80–100% asbestos and can crumble by hand. More hazardous than non-friable, as fibres are more easily released. Must always be removed by a Class A licensed asbestos removalist.

⚠️ Even the adhesives and glues used to lay old flooring can contain asbestos.

Bottom line: you can't tell asbestos flooring just by looking at it, testing every layer is the only way to know for sure.

💥 Fire Damaged Home, Full Remediation & Demolition 💥

Following a recent house fire in Adelaide, Specialised Services was engaged to complete the asbestos remediation, full demolition and site clearance.

🔹 Step 1: All asbestos containing materials and associated contamination safely removed.

🔹 Step 2: Our crew and our 25-ton excavator moved in for the full demolition, removing the fire damaged home, slab, footings, driveway, pavers, garage and shed slabs, along with the old fibreglass swimming pool.

🔹 Step 3: The swimming pool was backfilled with clean fill and the entire property cleared and reinstated.

🏠 Before, during and after asbestos removal

This laundry renovation began with the safe removal of asbestos containing wall linings and ceiling materials.

Once the removal work was completed, the space was ready for its fresh new fit-out, creating a brighter, cleaner and more functional laundry.

In many older homes, asbestos containing products were commonly used in wet areas such as laundries, bathrooms and kitchens, including wall and ceiling linings, flooring and backing materials, because they were durable and resistant to heat and moisture.

🏘️ Asbestos Eave Removal | Two-Storey Unit Complex

Recently our licensed team completed the safe removal of asbestos containing eave linings from a two-storey unit complex.

The project included: 
- Fixed perimeter scaffolding for safe access and egress
- Asbestos removal notification letters to the surrounding neighbours
- SafeWork SA Notification
- Air monitoring and clearance certification
