A major equipment upgrade inside a working power station. Nothing in the room could be moved, and outage windows and permits set the timing.

Every access point had to fit around large, sensitive equipment. The program could shift at short notice.

So we built access to match the job, not the other way round.

▪ Mobile platforms on castors, so crews could roll access right to each unit
▪ Tube and coupler in the tight spots where modular wouldn't fit
▪ Stair access where ladders weren't good enough

They never had to plan around us. We planned around them. ⚡

Six times.

That is how much more likely an Australian construction worker is to die by su***de than to be killed in a workplace accident.

Our industry has spent decades engineering out falls, collapses and crush injuries. Handrails, harnesses, permits, SWMS. It works. But the biggest risk to the person beside you rarely shows up on a JSA.

Male construction workers die by su***de at 25.7 per 100,000. For other employed men, it is 14.3. Apprentices and young workers carry the highest risk of all.

This year's National Safe Work Month theme is "Safe work is for life." For our crews, that starts with the people we work beside every day.

What that looks like for our crews:
▪ Starting every day together at the yard, not scattered across sites
▪ Regular one-on-one check-ins, not just an annual review
▪ Summits where we talk about personal goals, not only procedures
▪ Making sure everyone knows help is one phone call away

None of it is complicated. It just has to happen every day, by everyone.

Summit Day. Fitting name when the afternoon finishes on a bouldering wall.

We kicked off with the First Scaff Definition of Done and our standards. Then personal goal setting and sharing, followed by AroFlo compliance forms and safety documentation. Not the flashy part of the day. Probably the most important.

Next we moved on to pizza and bouldering at Rise Climbing. Not a scaffold in sight. No harnesses either.

We don’t do these days because we have to. We do them because our people are worth the investment.

67 employers charged. $3.75 million in fines. 11 workers killed.

That's Victoria's falls record for 2025 and WorkSafe has made it clear the enforcement pressure is not letting up in 2026.

The blitz continues. Inspectors are targeting scaffolding, ladders, and works at height on domestic and commercial construction sites.

The pattern in almost every incident is the same: the decision not to plan properly was made before the job started.

First Scaff operates in environments where you simply cannot afford that. Our clients need a scaffold that works for the whole shutdown, adapts when the site changes, and is documented correctly from the start.

Good access planning rarely gets noticed. That's the point. 🦺

The scaffolding industry is asking a direct question of government: is this a skilled trade, or isn't it?

The Scaffolding Association Australia's national survey is open now, closing 9 October 2026. The results will be used to build the case for formal apprenticeships and a qualification structure that reflects what scaffolders actually do on site.

First Scaff has always believed the answer is obvious. The jobs we do tunnels, hydro facilities, operating industrial sites, require people who can plan, adapt, and make sound decisions when conditions change. That's skilled work.

In 2023 a worker fell six metres from an unsafely constructed scaffold. SafeWork NSW handed down the penalty this month, two companies and their director were fined a combined $205,000

That's the outcome of one bad decision - or a series of them - that went unchecked before anyone set foot on site.

In industrial access, the planning is the protection. The scaffold handover certificate matters. The inspection before first use matters. The conversation with the client before the program locks matters.

By the time a scaffold is built, the decisions that determine whether it's safe or unsafe have already been made.

First Scaff works at the complex end power stations, hydro facilities, live industrial sites, where the consequences of getting it wrong are not recoverable. We plan that way from day one.

The cheapest quote rarely delivers the cheapest project. 🏗
