Students from Victoria University Melbourne work in interdisciplinary teams using concurrent engineering and systems engineering principles applied to complex mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic systems. The students directly involved with Victoria University Motorsport (VUM) aim at researching, designing, building, developing, and lastly competing with a Formula SAE car for intercollegi
ate competition. Students will have learned to be able to apply engineering, mathematical, and communication tools. They will have the ability to solve problems, function in professional environments and be able to gather information that would rarely ever be covered in formal courses. Students will have the ability to design fully comprehensive race vehicles using an engineering systems approach including: considering stakeholders, requirements, functions, structure and implementation. Students will learn how to maximize their design points in order for the team to win in the competition: trading off costs, time management, innovative technology, training, etc. Finally, the current team members establish an inviting environment for future team members to be able to understand various subsystems as well as learn how to apply engineering through research, optimization, communication skills and innovation.
