Western Australia's Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) continues its transformation from a system dominated by thermal generation to one increasingly shaped by utility-scale batteries, rooftop solar and flexible gas generation.

This winter has highlighted the challenges that often accompany periods of energy transition. Wholesale energy prices remained elevated, driven largely by coal and wind generation outages. As a result, higher-cost gas-fired generation has played a critical role, not only in replacing unavailable capacity but also in meeting the growing demand associated with battery charging.

While AEMO has indicated that several major coal outages are approaching completion, current outage levels suggest price volatility and upward pressure on energy costs may persist through September.

đź’ˇ WA Gas Outlook: Strong Supply Today, Strategic Questions Tomorrow

The WA domestic gas market remained well supplied throughout July 2026, supported by softer industrial demand and the anticipated arrival of additional supply from the Scarborough and Perth Basin developments.

However, the longer-term outlook remains nuanced. As the WEM continues to integrate higher levels of renewable generation and energy storage, the role of flexible gas generation becomes increasingly important. The timing of new supply projects and future demand growth will be key factors shaping WA's gas market and energy costs in the years ahead.
