Rio Tinto Gladstone

Rio Tinto Gladstone Rio Tinto is here for Gladstone. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

As a combined team across Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL), Yarwun and Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) we are stronger together as part of the Rio Tinto family. Through Here for Gladstone, our three operations (Rio Tinto Yarwun, Queensland Alumina Limited and Boyne Smelters Limited) have joined forces to improve the livelihoods and welfare of the region. Here for Gladstone represents the locals we em

ploy, the suppliers we engage, the work we do to tackle social issues such as mental health and domestic violence, the events we sponsor and the formal community programs we develop to help Gladstone grow. Here for Gladstone acknowledge the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng and Taribelang Bunda peoples on whose traditional lands we work. We extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today. We would also like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners that have a continued connection with the land on which we work and live.

Today we marked an exciting step forward for Gladstone, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between our Gladstone aluminium sites and CQUniversity.

This partnership strengthens a long-term collaboration between industry and education, helping to build local capability and create practical pathways from study to meaningful careers, right here in Central Queensland.

By connecting students with real-world experience across our Gladstone operations, through pathways like cadetships, this agreement supports a stronger pipeline of local talent and helps ensure our region continues to grow, innovate and thrive.

For the Gladstone community, it means more opportunities for young people to develop skills locally, gain industry experience, and build their futures close to home.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThis cadetship isnโ€™t just about studying โ€“ youโ€™re part of the team, doing real work and building real experience from day one.โ€ - Riley Barton, QAL Mechanical Engineering Cadet and CQUniversity student

Weโ€™re helping improve access to critical medical care for local families when they need it most.

Medical patients needing urgent aeromedical transfers from Gladstone Airport Corporation to major health hubs will soon be able to use a new Patient Transfer Facility, improving efficiency for ambulance services, aeromedical crews and emergency responders.

Construction is now underway on a new purpose-built Patient Transfer Facility at Gladstone Airport, marking a significant investment in regional health infrastructure. This ANZAC Day, we remember the courage, service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation in war, peace and peacekeeping operations since the Gallipoli landings in 1915.

Representatives from our Gladstone operations will lay wreaths at local services, including at the cenotaph in ANZAC Park, in honour of more than two million servicemen and women and the families who have supported them.

As we pause on 25 April, we reflect on the legacy of Gallipoli, the freedoms we enjoy, and give thanks to all who have served, past and present.

Lest we forget.

๐Ÿ“ท The ANZAC War Memorial in Gladstoneโ€™s ANZAC Park, 2025. Refurbished in 1996, the cenotaph features a Vietnam War soldier statue unveiled in April 2007, with reflection benches added in 2025.

๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™‚๏ธ The tides have changed!

After a stellar performance on Friday, the QAL apprentices have won the 2026 Great Raft Regatta in a longstanding campaign to take the top spot!

Apprentices across Rio Tinto's three Gladstone sites - QAL, Boyne Smelters and Yarwun refinery - were pumped to tackle the challenge alongside community groups and have scored serious bragging rights in the process.

Well done to our Apprentice & Trade Coordinators for supporting our up-and-coming tradespeople in events like this.

Weโ€™re proud to support the passionate Gladstone Festivals and Events volunteers for entertaining the community again this year at the Yaralla Gladstone Harbour Festival.
