Myth: Turning off the A/C when I’m not home saves energy.
This is only true if you plan to leave it off for an extended period. When you turn off the A/C before going to work on a hot summer day, and turn it back on when you return, it has to work harder to cool your home.

A better way to save energy is to set the thermostat to a temperature that’s about 10°F warmer than the temperature at which you feel most comfortable. Programmable thermostats make this simple by allowing you to indicate the time you go to work and your anticipated return time. The thermostat automatically raises the temperature when you leave and lowers it just before you get home, so you feel comfortable the moment you walk through the door and save energy.

Another Air Conditioning Myth.
You SAVE MORE BY USING A FAN & AIRCON SIMULTANEOUSLY
The opposite is true. Most people don’t realize that fans don’t cool the air, but merely move the air around. This makes you feel cooler, but doesn’t help cool your room any faster. Using an aircon and fan at the same time will actually drive up your utility bill.

Myth: Air filters don’t matter.
The air filter is like a sieve, it lets air through while trapping dirt, dust and other particles. When an A/C unit has a clean air filter, it draws in air effortlessly. As the filter accumulates debris, the unit works harder to draw in clean air and keep your house cool. Changing the filter as often as the manufacturer recommends reduces wasted energy by up to 10 percent.

Myth: Using an air conditioner will give you a cold.

Fake New, While becoming chilled may make you more vulnerable to illness, the common cold is caused by a virus, not the temperature. Go ahead, turn on the AC—but keep your home clean and wash your hands often to keep those colds away.

Did you know that Modern air conditioning began in 1850, with a doctor in Apalachicola, Fla., named John Gorrie. He noticed that his patients’ symptoms would worsen in the heat of the summer. So, he set out to come up with a way to cool them.
At first, he did this by putting ice in a bucket and suspending it over the patient, so the cool air would trickle down on them. Didn't really take off but another use was found for the bucket!

Myth: Lowering the thermostat’s temperature drastically cools the house faster.
Air conditioners operate at a consistent rate to reach the temperature that you set. Lowering the thermostat to a frigid temperature won’t cool your house faster; it will just cool at the same rate and waste energy.

Myth 1: The bigger the aircon, the better.

Air conditioners are designed to cool the air throughout the home at a certain rate. A large air conditioner will cool a small room at the same rate that it will cool a bigger space, thus consuming more energy.

An air conditioner should be the right size to fit a home. It might need to run a bit longer, but will use less electricity.
