We've had our Green Marine Lithium battery and its dedicated on-board charger fitted in the boat for almost nine months now, and I've had a few people recently ask me for an update and a quick report on how it's performing... In a word, brilliantly! It hasn't missed a beat.
We opted for the 12 volt 80 amp/hour model from Green Marine Lithium. This incredibly light (9 kg) battery lives in the bow of the Snubby and powers only our old 55 pound thrust MotorGuide bow-mounted electric motor.
Several people were a bit surprised that we went for just an 80 amp/hour battery but, to be honest, even a full day on the water with a fair bit of electric motor work (mostly at about 20 to 60% thrust) rarely drops the charge below about 55 to 60%, so I guess we'd easily get two days from it. In practice, I'm able to recharge every night and the recharging time is incredibly fast. If I did more remote work and was likely to be away from mains power (or my Bluetti portable power station) for several days at a time, I'd probably be better off with either the 105 or 120 amp/hour models (11 & 14 kilos respectively), but honestly, the 80 is more than adequate for us.
I absolutely love this unit's on-board digital gauge and also the mobile phone app that allows me to instantly monitor the state of the battery, its remaining charge and the recharging process... It's a game changer.
Good, safe, reliable lithium batteries certainly aren't cheap (this one is around the $1,300 mark), but you get what you pay for. For me, the dramatic weight reduction compared to my old lead crystal monster has been a huge bonus, as has the fast recharging, steady power and ability to know exactly how much juice I have left at any time. I wouldn't go back...
