What an amazing couple with grand plans for cruising aboard their Schionning Arrow 1360, which they are building on their property in WA. Naval architect, Felix Spencer and his equally talented partner, Onika, a marine electronics technician, are working on their dream boat which they acknowledge will be a three-to-five-year project around their day jobs.

It's all coming together neatly, with the ATL Composites’ DuFLEX panel system, which Felix describes as "a fast and accurate method".

🏆🏅Congratulations to Brett Burvill and Max Puttman who took out the 2026 F18 World Championship title, held at the Jervoise Bay Sailing Club, Western Australia in February.

They raced and won aboard the Burvill-designed and built F-18 Edge, which is the benchmark in the class.

Burvill, who runs Windrush Yachts in O'Connor, WA, is widely recognised as the "Godfather of foiling". He has spent four decades refining the art and science of composite boatbuilding, and his Windrush hydrofoiling moth which helped usher in the era of modern foiling moths is on display next to America’s Cup yacht, Australia II in the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.

Every Edge is built using ATL Composites’ KINETIX® epoxy systems, fibreglass fabrics and vacuum-bagging consumables – the same materials Burvill has relied on for decades.

“I build every boat as if it’s for myself,” he says. “ATL products make that possible. They’re reliable and consistent.”

Another mighty D will soon take to the sea!

The D-Class yacht “Peri” (D16) is currently in the final stages of restoration by the skilled team at Tasmanian Shipwrights & Co in Kettering, Tasmania. Originally built in 1950, Peri is one of the iconic Derwent Class yachts that have been part of Tasmania’s maritime story for nearly a century.

Peri is one of around 26 Derwent Class yachts which were built from the late 1920s through the 1950s in Tasmania. They were characterised by their whimsical names, such as Mermaid, Titania, Undine, Gnome, Goblin, Pixie and Gremlin.

Nathan O’Neil, Director at Tasmanian Shipwrights & Co, reports that the next ‘D’ to return to the fleet will be painted off-white, harking back to that classical wooden boat aesthetic.

“Peri will retain many of her original features, such as the cabin, which we repaired, but her deck was Celery Top which we’ve replaced with Queensland Beech because it’s more durable.”

Underneath the timber deck is 9mm ply fibreglassed with 400gsm double bias fiberglass to create a “super solid substrate”.

Nathan and apprentice, Thorfinn, have been working on the historic keelboat since June 2025, and hope to have Peri back on the water by May.

The project has required bucket loads of WEST SYSTEM 105 epoxy resin, 413 Microfibre blend, 410 Microlight for faring and 411 Microsphere Blend for filler. The final step will be Epifanes premium marine-grade varnish for exceptional durability, UV resistance and a lustrous finish.

The team at ATL is cheering on one of our customers, Mike Smith, who is building his entry into this year's Golden Globe Race which starts 6 September in Les Sables d’Olonne, on the Atlantic coast of western France.

Scheduled for every four years, the non-stop, solo, round-the-world yacht race, requires sailors to circumnavigate south of the great capes roughly 30,000 nautical miles alone without modern technology. It bans GPS, satellite navigation, and modern materials, and sailors must rely solely on sextants and paper charts.

Newcastle-based Mike Smith has entered two previous editions, but due to complications with his boat and commitments, he didn’t finish the build in time.

He is building a replica of Suhaili - Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s 32-foot Bermudan ketch in which the British sailor completed the 312-day, 30,000-mile journey in the original 1968-69 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race – the only competitor to finish the race out of nine yachts.

“I have come up with a design that pushes the boundaries, and it’s interesting from a technical standpoint. It shares a lot of features with multihulls. It’s strong and light and I expect it will do well.”

Key to his craft is a “truck load” of ATL Composites' products.

“The Kinetix laminating epoxy range is ideal because it performs well in hot and cold. Kinetix R246 is such a hard resin, which is vital for a wooden boat, but you want to sand it within two weeks, or it’s as hard as anything!"

Structural materials are evolving.

Across transport, construction, defence and marine industries, engineers are moving beyond traditional substrates toward high-performance structural composite systems.

DuFLEX® Structural Panels are engineered sandwich panels manufactured within ATL’s fully integrated composite ecosystem — combining ATL-formulated KINETIX® epoxy systems, TECHNIGLUE® structural adhesives, engineered foam cores and high-strength reinforcements.

The result isn’t just weight reduction.
It’s structural optimisation.

✔️ High stiffness-to-weight performance
✔️ Corrosion resistance
✔️ Dimensional stability
✔️ Long-term durability
✔️ Fabrication efficiency

From aerial platforms to marine hulls and architectural structures — DuFLEX® delivers predictable structural performance in demanding environments.

Advanced composites aren’t replacing materials.
They’re redefining what structural systems can be.

A once-in-117-year moment on the water

From 16–20 January 2026, an extraordinary fleet from Norman R. Wright & Sons will gather at the Australian National Maritime Museum, celebrating 117 years of Australian boatbuilding excellence.

With 18 iconic vessels on display — including Bali Hai II (1964) and the beautifully restored South Pacific II (1962) — this showcase is a rare tribute to craftsmanship spanning more than a century.

ATL Composites is proud to be a long-standing supplier and friend of the Wrights for over 45 years, supporting generations of timber and composite construction through WEST SYSTEM®, KINETIX® epoxies and structural adhesives — blending heritage with modern performance.

A remarkable celebration of tradition, innovation, and enduring partnerships on the water.

If you're looking for something to do in Sydney that will appeal to the whole family, Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour will host a once-in-117-year exhibition of vessels crafted by Norman R. Wright & Sons with yachts representing every era.

This is by far the largest display of Wrights vessels for a long time and certainly worth a visit.

There will be 18 large vessels on water, including the iconic 80-foot Bali Hai II built in 1964 and 75-foot South Pacific II launched in 1962 as “Beryl May” and having just undergone a major refit for her current owners. The exquisite 20-foot Jannett built in 1911 will be the oldest boat on show, and there will also be a variety of smaller craft including dinghies and racing yachts.

ATL Composites is proud to be a trusted supplier to Norman R. Wright & Sons for the past 45 years, and a partner in events such as the biennial Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart.
