Does your home deter intruders?

At this home in Burleigh heads the owner was worried about increasing criminal activity in the area.

I suggested installing floodlights around the perimeter of the house, which have an inbuilt sensor that activates the lights when motion is detected.

After installing, I did a walkthrough with the customer to make sure they were happy with the sensors activation range and set the amount of time that each light would stay on for.

These lights are light years ahead of any other sensor light on the market and come with a 7 year warranty.

The final step in the security upgrade of this house is installing cameras later this week.

Are you ready for the 2027 QLD smoke alarm compliance update?

From 1st January 2027 EVERY house, townhouse and apartment in QLD must have a smoke alarm:
-In every level of the home
-In every bedroom of the home
-In every hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the house

The alarms must be:
-Photoelectric type
-Interconnected (if ones goes off they all go off)
-Hardwired with 240v with a battery backup or powered by a 10 year lithium battery that’s not removable

Right now this only applies to rentals and new build homes, but this will apply to EVERY home from the 1st of January 2027

Failure to do this can result in home insurance being void in the event of a fire or hefty fines.

I only install the best quality alarms that have proven their reliability through the infield experience of myself and other electricians.

These alarms have a mesh barrier around the exterior which prevents insects getting inside (a common cause of false alarms).

They can also be paired with a remote control that can turn them off instantly. Most people find this is a lot easier than smashing the alarms with a broom or waving a tea towel for a few minutes while losing your hearing

An airconditioner deep clean in one minute!

Do you know what you’re breathing in from your AC?

With most peoples' air conditioners getting put to work all through summer, now is a great time to get rid of all the dirty stuff that builds up after heavy use.

This simple light swap over will pay for itself after a year

This high rise apartment block I service in Coolangatta has all the community lighting running 24/7

Rather than just swapping the old light, I installed an oyster light with a built in sensor.
This will only activate the light for one minute when someone is actually in the area, greatly reducing its power usage as well as the lights life span.

Will your switchboard disconnect power before electrical shock occurs?

This switchboard had been almost untouched since 1982. Ceramic fuses and some circuit breakers were protecting all circuits within the apartment.

The current standards require a minimum of a safety switch on all power circuits. Any new circuit or a circuit that that is altered also needs to be installed with a safety switch. An alteration is when new cabling is added to the circuit - this could be for a new PowerPoint, light, air conditioner etc

What’s the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

-A circuit breaker prevents cabling and appliances by cutting off power when the level of current exceeds the cables operating limit (preventing fire).

-A safety switch does the above but also protects people from electric shock by detecting current leaks. It will disconnect power in milliseconds once detected (such as in the event of electric shock or a fault in an appliance)

Although not always legally required, it’s a great idea to upgrade every circuit immediately to ensure everyone in the household is protected in the event of a fault.
