We have questioned a disappointing decision to list two tree species as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Ignoring the latest scientific evidence and feedback, the Federal Government has agreed to the Threatened Species Scientific Committee’s recommendation to include Alpine Ash and White Ash forests in Australia as endangered, which came into effect on 20 March 2026.

“It’s very disappointing that the Threatened Species Scientific Committee has ignored the feedback from highly respected scientists, with the final declaration simply replicating the initial consultation documents," said CEO Diana Hallam.

An interesting read. It is disappointing to see the science ignored and the exploitation of fear become the driving force to justify the transfer of land tenure.

After the recent announcement of the proposed new national park in northern New South Wales, I have prepared a story about one of Australia’s most politicised animals: the koala. You’ve probably seen the headlines predicting their extinction and the constant calls for ever-expanding national parks. But much of this debate rests on simplistic, and often misleading, narratives.

Drawing on history, fire ecology, forest management and population science, the article examines why koala numbers have always risen and fallen in cycles, how modern “hands-off” preservation often worsens those extremes, and how today’s fear-driven messaging shapes major public policy.

If you care about koalas, forests, or the future of evidence-based environmental management, I think you’ll find my story both challenging and worthwhile.

Playing with fire when it comes to our bushland

Australia is a continent shaped by fire. Long before the first people arrived one tree, the eucalypt, rose to dominate the landscape and create the conditions in which fire became the signature of the land.

Having research continue to guide forestry practices is helpful in maintaining forest biodiversity. Interesting to note that native forest harvesting has no impact on koala numbers.

Dr Brad Law (Forest Science Unit, DPIRD) discusses his forest biodiversity research in relation to forestry. Brad has been researching these issues for 30 ye...

In addition to promoting forest health and a fully renewable and sustainable resource, forestry workers are involved in fire mitigation and emergency response. Forestry workers are working in the forests most days, they have the appropriate equipment, they maintain the access roads and have long term forest knowledge and experience. Thank you to all of those who have been involved with protecting our farmlands and communities from high intensity wildfires. Australian Forest Contractors Association AFCA Support Our Native Timber Industry - Mid North Coast NSW

As the bushfire season begins in the southern states, it's important to remember the contribution our forestry sector makes in this space.

A survey of AFPA members shows the sector is responsible for more than $100 million of direct annual investment towards bushfire prevention, mitigation and response nationally, including:

🗼 137 fire towers, staff, detection cameras and other costs
🔥 Firebreaks, roads, prescribed burning and maintenance with $65 million
🚒 1,200 response appliances and units like tankers and bulk water carriers
🧑‍🚒 More than 1,500 firefighting personnel
