For 30 years, we've worked alongside governments, water authorities, and communities to deliver smarter, more resilient water management. These partnerships remain fundamental to our ongoing effort to address shared water challenges. As water pressures exacerbate, we’re seeing an increase in commitments from the private sector to collectively support basin-level initiatives.

In March of this year, Google released its Water Stewardship Project Portfolio, signalling a growing willingness among global organisations to invest in initiatives that deliver clear, measurable water outcomes. In the Colorado River Basin, Google is partnering with Gila River Indian Community to deploy our advanced surface irrigation technology, improving water efficiency and strengthening long-term system resilience.

Corporate investment of this kind complements the essential role that the public sector, water authorities and communities play. It brings additional resources and reach to help proven solutions scale in water-stressed regions where the need is both immediate and enduring.

Just as we were in 1995, Rubicon Water remains committed to delivering the kind of outcomes these initiatives set out to achieve.

As we mark 30 years of innovation in water management, these images capture the global reach of our technology in action, through the delegations that visited our Australian and North American operations in 2023 and 2024.

Visitors from the United States, India, Spain, Romania, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, South Korea, China, Egypt and Japan engaged directly with Rubicon’s measurement, control and automation systems for irrigation networks.

These visits provide hands on insight into how canal automation, real time monitoring and precise water delivery work together to improve performance across large scale irrigation systems. From demonstration sites to system walkthroughs, discussions focused on how water can be measured, controlled and distributed more efficiently and reliably.

They also reflect growing international demand for smarter water infrastructure, as more regions look to modernise ageing networks and improve water productivity.

Across every visit, one thing is clear: the future of water management is increasingly collaborative, and we’re proud to be part of that global conversation.

As we continue to celebrate 30 years of delivering solutions, we’re reflecting on the moments that have shaped us.

In October 2020, Goulburn-Murray Water in Victoria completed the AU$2 billion Connections Project. This is currently the largest irrigation modernisation project in Australian history. Under the project, we delivered more than 10,000 gates and meters, automating over 3,300 km of irrigation channels.
Following the independent audit, it was announced that the project had exceeded the water saving target of 429 gigalitres (350,000 acre-feet) per year. For context, this volume exceeds the entire household consumption of Victoria’s ~7 million residents.

In modernised areas, delivery efficiency now surpasses 90%, demonstrating long-term impact and creating a benchmark for gravity-canal delivery networks globally.

We’re proud to support outcomes like this, delivering lasting benefits for irrigators, the environment, and the broader community.

As we celebrate 30 years, we continue to reflect on the innovations that have propelled us forward.

In 2018, we strengthened our manufacturing capability by building our dedicated sensor manufacturing cleanroom. Our cleanroom is a climate-controlled environment complimented by a range of custom-built automated test processes, custom circuit board assembly and dedicated sensor assembly facilities for water flow and water level sensors.

By investing in advanced manufacturing capability, we strengthened our ability to design, build and test the critical components that underpin modern irrigation automation. The cleanroom commenced operations in early 2019 and remains a key part of how we deliver reliable, high-performance technology to irrigation networks around the world.

As we continue to reflect on 30 years of operations, we’re looking back on the partnerships that have shaped our journey. One such partnership is with the Consorzio di Bonifica Territori del Mincio, the consortium responsible for sustainable irrigation management across thousands of hectares in Northern Italy.

Prior to modernisation, water was continuously lifted from Lake Superiore di Mantova at flows of up to 4 m³/s, with regulation carried out manually based on historical levels. This resulted in significant unused water being discharged from the district and subsequently re‑lifted for drainage, driving high energy consumption. From 2015 to 2017, we began with a pilot to test and refine our software and control routines across the system. What started as a focused evaluation laid the foundation for full network transformation.

Today, the project spans 50+ sites and has delivered clear, measurable results. Following full commissioning, the Angeli Cerese district achieved a reduction in water withdrawals of approximately 29%, with a corresponding reduction in mechanical lifting energy. During peak summer months, withdrawals from the main pumping plant were reduced by up to 40%. Critically, during the severe drought of 2022, the system enabled reliable water delivery to all users, avoiding the significant crop losses seen elsewhere and confirming the value of a district‑wide solution.

Pictured here are some of the very first gates installed in the Angelie Cerese district.

For thirty years, projects like this have proven that when automation, measurement and system‑wide visibility work together, meaningful and lasting improvements follow.

Introducing The Open Channel Podcast, a new podcast featuring conversations with leading voices in water. The Open Channel explores the people, places, and ideas shaping the future of water.

In our opening episode, we sit down with Murray Smith, a natural resource and water management expert with more than three decades of experience. Murray reflects on Coleambally Irrigation’s modernisation journey, the lift in delivery efficiency from around 70% to 92%, and how achieving that result required commitment from not just the entire organisation, but the entire community.

Murray joined Coleambally Irrigation as CEO in 2004, during the height of the Millennium Drought, and went on to lead one of the world’s most successful open-channel modernisation programs.

As we celebrate 30 years, we continue to reflect on the milestones that shaped our journey.

In New Zealand, the importance of local, on-the-ground presence became evident in when Rubicon technology enabled around 60 Mid Canterbury farmers to become the first in New Zealand to order their irrigation water online.

In 2013, we established our Ashburton office in New Zealand, building on early momentum and committing to an emerging market across the Tasman Sea. From there, digital ordering, automation and data-driven irrigation continued to expand across Canterbury and beyond.

Fast forward to today, we have installed over 1700 Rubicon sites across New Zealand, comprising gates and meters, controlled pipeline offtakes, controlled pumpsheds and core telemetry and host software. This infrastructure helps growers to receive water more efficiently, transparently and reliably.

For Murrumbidgee Irrigation Limited, seeing results firsthand was a crucial aspect of network-wide adoption of automation.

Automation was first introduced in areas with growers who were keen to trial new approaches, while others preferred to continue with familiar practices. As flows were managed more efficiently and water delivery became more predictable, the benefits were quickly noticed on farm. Gradually, questions shifted from understanding the change to exploring when automation might be introduced more widely.

Growers began to recognise how smart automation could support productivity, reduce waste, and make water management more reliable — turning early caution into informed confidence.
