Meet Brendan, one of our new staff members on King Island!

Brendan made the move from Victoria to King Island earlier this year to take on a role as an electrical fitter, and he's settled right into island life🏝️

“I’d been trying to get into high-voltage work for a while,” says Brendan, “so when I saw this role advertised, I wanted to grab the opportunity with both hands, and I was up for a change of location and lifestyle.”

He also appreciates Hydro Tasmania's commitment to safety👷

“There’s a lot more structure, a lot more support, and a real focus on values, standards and doing things safely and properly,” Brendan says.

Earlier this month, our team members Adrian and Ben hosted some of the newest University of Tasmania engineering students for a tour of Cluny Power Station.

During the tour, students were given an insight into all aspects of the station and its operations, with the opportunity to see firsthand how years of university theory are applied in the real-world generation of power.

“Thanks heaps again for showing us around Cluny. It was really great. The students told me straight away when we hopped on the bus how much they enjoyed it and how much they got out of it”, Evan Franklin, Lecturer at the University of Tasmania.

The team at Marine and Safety Tasmania - MAST have upgraded the pontoon at the Swan Bay boat ramp (Yingina/Great Lake) following community feedback about the previous ‘step-up’ design.

MAST is now seeking feedback on the upgraded ramp. If successful, similar pontoons may be considered for other inland water locations.

If you’ve used the ramp, reach out to the team at MAST to share your feedback

This year’s Australian Heritage Festival invites us to reflect on Change: how it shapes places, communities and the stories we carry forward.

As part of the festival, we’re excited to share ‘ Waddamana Power Station Movable Heritage Collection – a Digital Journey Through Our Early Story’. Waddamana Power Station is the birthplace of Hydro Tasmania. From the commissioning of the state’s first publicly owned power station in 1916, Waddamana became a starting point for significant industrial, social and environmental change across our state.

This online collection brings together objects from the early decades of hydropower development, offering a window into everyday working lives, emerging communities, and the lasting legacy of the Great Lake Power Scheme. Over time, this collection will continue to grow, with more objects to share.

We invite you to explore the collection 👉 https://ehive.com/collections/202564/hydro-tasmania

Thank you to everyone who came to chat to us about Tarraleah’s Environmental Impact Statement. We had great conversations with about 80 people – about the future of the golf course and power station, water level changes, access to recreation areas and future opportunities for local communities.

Thanks also to the local businesses who helped get the word out about our drop-ins! Bothwell Post Office, Bothwell Garage & Roadhouse, Aunty V’s Café at Hamilton, IGA X-Press Ouse, Ouse Roadhouse, Ouse Online Access Centre, Tarraleah Lodge and Wayatinah Tavern.

The EIS is on exhibition until 25 May. Head to our project page for all the details or call into the Council offices at Bothwell or Hamilton.

Poatina Power Station is our second biggest hydropower station at 360 MW capacity and it’s located deep underground (150 metres)!

We’ve kicked off upgrade works on the station’s second turbine, part of a $200m investment over the next decade to modernise all six turbines. They’ll be more efficient, more flexible and use less water to produce the same amount of energy. Minister for Energy and Renewables Nick Duigan MLC visited today for a first-hand look and to meet the project team.

This is a big project involving our on-site team, our workshop at Cambridge and our consulting arm Entura. Project manager Thor Madsen says the work takes careful planning and teamwork, leaving no stone unturned. “In a job like this, you’re essentially taking the machine back to a doughnut,” he says. “You remove almost everything – mechanical, electrical, auxiliary systems – and then you rebuild it from the ground up.”

From Wednesday 13 May, Sustainable Timber Tasmania will conduct fuel reduction burns around Wayatinah Power Station to help reduce the risk of bushfire to nearby power infrastructure.

For safety, the Catagunya boat ramp will be closed from Wednesday until the weekend.

Other boat ramps in the area will still be open including Wayatinah boat ramp, to the south of Wayatinah Lagoon, although it may be impacted by smoke. For a full list of our boat ramps, visit https://www.hydro.com.au/things-to-do

Smoke will be visible in the area during the burn. If weather conditions become unfavourable, the burn will be postponed.

A map of planned fuel reduction burns is available at - http://www.fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=colWhatsBurningNow
