Peacocks aren’t native to Tassie and are actually called Indian Peafowl. They’ve been a part of the Cataract Gorge for over a century and were introduced because it was fashionable for public and private gardens throughout the British Empire to have ornamental birds such as peacocks.
There isn’t a clear historical record identifying who donated or brought the original peacocks to the Gorge but the most likely explanation is the Launceston City and Suburbs Improvement Association, the volunteer group that transformed the Gorge into a Victorian pleasure garden from 1890 onwards.
