Another couple of our Ultimate Collapsible Columns in Column Change Auto out the door. A full conversion for a XK falcon which includes our C4 for column, all complying mounting hardware and a full Smoothshift Cable shift kit. We also rebuilt and converted the steering box to suit a borgeson coupling to join it all together.

2nd Automatic column is to suit an FJ Holden with a 4L60E electric 4 speed auto. Again supplied with complying billet mounts and full Smoothshift Cable connection kit.

All Australian Made and Engineer approved Australia wide, and Automatic columns come fully featured with Billet illuminated quadrants and internal shift gates to suit specific transmissions.

And we're down to 1 left in brushed finish of our XK to XP falcon cup holders with phone mounts as these go out the door today. No more phones sliding off your ashtray and an attractive billet aluminium assembly that will last a lifetime. Just remove the ashtray and replace with this neat offset holder that still gives access to heater control cable, and holds 2 drinks up to 72mm diameter including YETI travel cups.

Phone sits neatly with simple spring loaded adjustable holder, TPU inserts in base that are removable. Makes those long cruises even more pleasurable without hanging on to drinks while driving and keeps phone secure.

So what's it really take to make a shift tube in our Ultimate Automatic Collapsible columns. Well here's a brief run down of the most complex part inside a column.

3 piece of tube are cut, then they need machining square, each piece is then swaged to different shapes and dimensions, then back in the lathe to turn and/bore the swaged ends to diameters with a tolerance of +/-0.02mm this achieved only by controlling accurate temperatures. If they're wrong they're in the bin. This occurs before selecting matching components for assembly this is the critical part if the fit is too tight they won't meet specifications to collapse, if fit is too loose then they won't shift gears and slip when trying to shift.

So that's 3 tubes, 6 machining ends square, 4 swaging OP's, then another 4 different turning and boring operations, 2 tubes are then assembled once sizing is matched to hit targets using a load cell and data logging the forces every .25 seconds for accuracy and no we won't show how we achieve this part of the process.

Then there's drive key welding, radial drilling and tapping operations on the 3rd tube then final welding of 3rd tube to the other 2 to get the final length correct for a column.

And that's the bit you don't see inside the column and what's it job? To change gears and collapse if ever required. Yeah easy hey, if you don't know much about manufacturing every time you have a different operation to do, it requires different setup, which means time on top of the job that looks so simple.

Helped a customer modify his Mk2 Cortina Burman steering box with a new Billet top assembly to delete the broken cast unit and 1 piece tube assembly, now it's ready to drop in as an independent part to the column, might need to make a few more of these.

Shiny Stuff Saturday, running some prototype work for AMP Performance. Pretty happy with the first off parts straight off our Hurco VM10 I'm sure it can be tweaked a little more, but it's pretty good straight off the machine and should look better polished.

Thanks again

Well it's that time of year again that the office and workshop are closed until Tuesday 9th as we make our annual run to Cooly Rocks. We are going to be in the zone on marine parade Saturday and Sunday from Coolangatta hotel up past the Surf Club, our little red XK will have some gear floating around in it if you want to catch up we'll be around it definitely between 2 and 3.30 daily, if you don't catch us earlier (I'm sure we'll be seeing the regulars again 🍻)
