What a close-up tells you is whether the quality is real or surface. At distance, a weak finish and a good one can look similar. Inside a metre, they don't. The weak one reads as paint. The good one reads as material.

Battens read differently depending on the weather.

Morning light picks up the grain. Overcast flattens the detail. Afternoon shadow makes spacing feel wider than it is. A façade that works in one light but fails in another usually has the wrong profile, the wrong spacing, or a finish that can't hold its tone as conditions shift.

Good batten work accounts for all three conditions, not just the prettiest one.

Powder coating and anodising get put side by side in comparisons. They shouldn't be. They solve different problems.

Powder coating is an applied finish. Dry pigment gets electrostatically charged and cured onto the surface. The colour range is wide, adhesion is strong, and recoating is possible over time.

Anodising is a conversion process. A protective oxide layer is grown from the aluminium itself, so the finish is part of the substrate rather than sitting on top of it. Colour range is narrower. Durability is very high, and the surface doesn't chip in the usual sense because there's nothing to chip off.

The right choice depends on environment, colour requirements, and long-term expectations. Specifying one when the brief needed the other is expensive to unwind later. Worth the early conversation.

Two finishes are dominating current façades. Woodgrain and matte black.

They're doing opposite work. Woodgrain asks a building to feel approachable. Matte black asks it to feel deliberate. Projects trying to do both rarely succeed at either.

The usable version is to pick the dominant intent early and commit. Supporting materials can soften or sharpen from there.

Woodgrain choice tends to get decided too late.

By the time samples come out, the rest of the palette is already locked. Which means the finish gets matched to a decision it should have been part of from the beginning.

Java sits well against lighter stone or render, carrying weight without crowding the rest of the palette. Spotted Gum is the more forgiving option when a brief wants warmth without a strong statement. Poplar works best indoors, where light is softer and the grain reads up close.

Between the three, there's no "best." Only the right one for the palette it's going into. And that's easier to get right when the finish is part of the early conversation, not the late one.

A quick look inside the workshop.

The reason finishing happens here, rather than on site, is simple enough. Site conditions can't be controlled. Dust, temperature, humidity, UV. All of it shifts hour to hour, and none of it is friendly to a coat that needs to cure properly.

A workshop lets the process stay steady, which is why the façade ends up steady too. Control has to happen somewhere. Either at the bay or on the building, and one of those is a lot more forgiving.

Another completed project delivered for HomeCo.

A project is easy to judge the week it's finished. The more telling version is how it reads three or four years in, once tones have had time to move, once joints have seen a summer, once the façade has stopped being a render.

From raw extrusion to a finished component.

What the sequence really shows isn't transformation. It's commitment. Once the extrusion is in the booth, there's no going back to plain aluminium. Every decision made at specification (profile, powder grade, finish, tolerance) arrives at this point and stays.

That's why the early choices matter more than they seem. The workshop doesn't fix a weak spec. It delivers exactly what was ordered.
