A house is for living in, and it needs mostly to be a home. Forget this when designing or choosing materials for building and you risk having a beautiful museum piece instead. When judging our Courtyard House as a winner for the NSW Regional Architecture Awards, they described its space inside as “a home that feels ‘just right’ in scale”.

Bigger isn’t always better (contrary to what “The Block” would have you believe). So if you are looking to build, never apologise for only wanting (or only being able to afford) smaller spaces. This could be the best thing anyway, because what you need is “just right”!

Want a successful build? Collaboration is key. Everyone on the team for our Courtyard House cared about the project, and this care showed up in the end result. Architects, us as the builder, client and our trades all worked well together for the best result we could achieve. This was recognised by the jury for the NSW Regional Architecture Awards when they awarded this house as a winner.

Their full citation reads:

"A respect of landscape and nurture of its inhabitants is clearly evident in the design of this joyful home on Kamilaroi country just outside of Tamworth.

By embracing and elevating the rural vernacular the home appears to the street as a robust agricultural shed. A beautifully choreographed arrival sequence leads one into a verdant courtyard, a refuge enhanced with soft light and warm hand-laid materials.

Internally, carefully curated volumes define spaces, resulting in a home that feels 'just right' in scale whether it is accommodating its usual occupants or many guests. A successful collaboration between the architect, the client, the builder and local trades has created a sensible hierarchy of detailing and materials relative to the habitation of the various zones within the home.

Energy and water efficient, with the site being slowly repaired with carefully considered landscaping, this home will thrive in the increasingly challenging semi-arid climate of the north-west."

Another win for our Courtyard House (aka House in the Dry)!

This time it’s been recognised in the 2025 NSW Regional Architecture awards held by the Australian Institute of Architects in the category Residential Architecture: New Houses.

Congratulations to Antony Martin of MRTN Architects on having his exceptional design work recognised yet again. Glad we could be part of this amazing project and bring it to life for him and the wonderful owners with the care that it deserved!

Sometimes you just want some extra space for parking and working. This was what our client found she needed, so now the framework is going up on a small addition for her that we have underway at the moment.
With the beautiful weather we are having at the moment it’s a great time to be working outdoors! 🌞🌲

There’s nothing better than having a place to “back up to” and warm up after coming home on a cold winter’s night, and this stacked stone tile feature fireplace is just that place 🔥

In milder weather, this lounge still works well. Swing open the twin sets of double-doors directly onto the Alfresco area for fresh air and a great inside-outside connection.

Glazed highlights above the doors let extra natural light in to cheer the room regardless of the weather outside, and they’re all double-glazed for energy efficiency.

This home is built with entertaining in mind.

The generous kitchen allows plenty of room to work: huge island bench, loads of cupboard space, quality appliances and a glorious view to the hills of Daruka.

A separate bar area allows the drinks zone to be kept separate with boiling/chilled water and everything else needed; appliances, sink, and storage. Both tie together with their genuine stone benchtops.

In a style reminiscent of French Provincial, our latest home impressively stands its ground, unique in its surrounds. With angles and bends, it wraps around its site so that on approach visitors are greeted with a full view of its elegance. Once its landscaping is done it will only look more special. 🌳🌷

This is no regular home. Ten gables - some of which are doubles that stand below and then join onto another - help form the shape, each pointing skyward and giving height to balance the impact of the steep roof with its 35 degree pitch. It was no simple feat working on this roof; care had to be taken to grip tightly and after a while the calves of the legs were aching as they were stretched out!

With its terracotta tiles, this roof will look as good long into the future as it does today. These tiles actually came with a warranty that the colour will not change for the life of the tile; and they have an amazing 100 year warranty! Now THAT is peace of mind. 😊

Flooded with natural light via the skylight, the bathroom at our Daruka Pavilion One has come together beautifully.

Fluted wall tiles reach to the ceiling, contrasted with terrazzo tiles on the floor that continue into the shower. A tasteful V-groove curved vanity, brushed gunmetal tapware and fittings and shaped mirror finish the look.

Practicality has not been forgotten, with the double shower having a convenient full-width ledge for all those bits and pieces and supplies we use when showering.

Simply elegant.

Continuing our journey inside Pavilion One at our Daruka project.
The bespoke kitchen starts with shaker doors in contrasting colours. Benchtops have been custom-formed from stainless steel. And into this, the double-sink has been seamlessly moulded. A separate walk-in-pantry provides ample storage.

Above, the room is crowned with a spotted gum suspended timber ceiling.

With an easy line of sight from this area through the large doorways to the view beyond, the feeling of connection will remain even when work is being done. This kitchen will be a joy to be in!

Check out our coming and past posts about this project to see more elements of this special build.
