Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation are holding a survey and would appreciate you taking part.

The Phase 2 consultation survey is to support the development of a 10 Year Science and Technology Plan for WA.

This Plan will provide a cross government strategy that covers all elements of science and technology, identifying the State’s current capabilities and priority areas, along with current and future challenges that investment in science and technology can address. It will enable Western Australia to identify and leverage the State’s outstanding opportunities and competitive advantages by providing a clear vision and long term strategy to support local science, research and technology capability, performance and impact. This is an exciting opportunity to elevate Western Australia as a global hub of science and technology development.

Phase 1 of consultation involved extensive stakeholder workshops held across the State. The Findings Report for Phase 1 is attached.

Consultation Survey

The survey can be accessed here: https://jtsi.citizenspace.com/science-and-technology-plan/10-year-science-and-technology-plan-public-consult/

This survey is designed to be completed by those working in science and technology fields or in roles that support science and technology in some way. This includes those working in universities, government, research institutes and industry. However, anyone may complete the survey. You are welcome to circulate this survey within your networks. We are also conducting a separate survey aimed at the general public.

The survey will close at midnight on 18 February 2024.

Congratulations to the Kwinana Industries Council on the promotion of up and coming apprentices and trades.

Another one of our wonderful KIC Pre-apprentices has just secured an Apprenticeship.

Sydney, from South Coast Baptist College, will start her Apprenticeship with Alcoa in early 2024. Sydney completed the KIC iWOMEN Project when she was in Year 10 and has just successfully completed the first year of the KIC Female Engineering Pre-apprenticeship. Sydney is pictured with her Lecturer Alan Senior, South Metropolitan TAFE.

We know she will give 100% to succeed in her chosen career pathway – well done Sydney 😊

Western Australian Premier, Mark McGowan, said he welcomes this latest milestone as BP begins the transformation of its Kwinana infrastructure into a renewables hub.

“This transformational project, which is one of five in the world, is a testament to the fact that Western Australia continues to be an ideal location to invest and do business,” Mr McGowan said.

“Initiatives like this bring significant benefits to our State, boost our strong economy and ensure we have a long line of local jobs and work for local businesses into the future.”

One of the world’s most powerful and greenest supercomputers will soon produce the most reliable and comprehensive climate change projections for Western Australia until the end of the century.

The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre’s Setonix supercomputer at Bentley will help governments, businesses, and communities understand and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Setonix takes just one second to do a calculation that would take a human 1.5 billion years to achieve. Its power is equivalent to 150,000 laptops working in unison.

The state-of-the-art projections will allow the Government to prepare for more intense extreme weather events like cyclones, floods and bushfires, better protect WA’s unique biodiversity and support major investment decisions in energy infrastructure, planning and regional development.

The first projections are expected to be available to climate scientists next year. They will then be analysed and processed for use by a broader audience.
