ENGINEERING WITH RESPECT FOR THE PAST & SOLUTIONS FOR THE FUTURE.

Over the years Glasgow Engineering has been involved with the restoration of some of Launceston’s most iconic engineering landmarks, I thought it might be interesting to showcase the jobs completed over the years.
With 135 years of engineering experience in Launceston, Glasgow Engineering has provided reliable
engineering services to clients across various industry sectors in Tasmania.
In recent years, the company has developed a reputation for specialist engineering services in heritage,
conservation, and restoration projects where technical performance must be carefully balanced with the
protection of the existing fabric.

A wild night of windy weather took its toll on one of the Elm Trees in City Park falling it across Brisbane Street blocking the road and crushing a section of the historic palisade fence around the perimeter of the park.
When Launceston City Council delivered what was left of the fence to our workshop, it was certainly going to be a challenging repair. The wrought iron palisade fencing and the cast iron entrance gates were designed by architect Alexander North and made by W.H Knight & Sons foundry in 1903 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.
This project required many hours of straightening every individual component, the top fence rail had stretched causing the spear centre’s to be out of pitch which required many adjustments to be made to bring them back. The concrete wall was repaired by our friends at Zanetto Civil who did a beautiful job of patching in the concrete. 𝐆π₯𝐚𝐬𝐠𝐨𝐰 π„π§π π’π§πžπžπ«π’π§π

Our Fabrication Shop is in for a boring Show Day on Thursday (tomorrow)
We are going to switch the public holiday on Thursday to Friday so the guys can have a well deserved long weekend.
Well some of them, some still have site work booked in for Friday. It seems so silly that Thursday β€œShow Day” is still a public holiday but we no longer have an agricultural show. Wouldn’t it be common sense and more productive for buisness, if they changed the date πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

After a night of furious burnouts by one of Launceston’s finest citizens, the enjoyment of shredding tyres ended with tears and an abrupt stop at the Pilgrim Uniting Church for communion. The car smashed into the historic cast iron fence in Paterson Street, Launceston, causing a great deal of damage to the fence and the drivers pride.
This project required us to use many traditional methods to undertake the repair. New spear tips and balusters had to be re-cast by our friends at Apco Engineering in Hobart as many had been discarded during the clean up. Jigs were made to rejoin the broken rails, cast iron welding the broken rails and balusters. Once joined the balusters were then leaded into the rails in the traditional manner. Concrete plinth and footing repairs were made, the post and gates were repaired and the fence reinstalled on site. Once this was done the balusters were then leaded into the concrete plinth in the traditional manner. Leading into the plinth sockets provides critical structural stability, moisture insulation and allows for thermal expansion and contraction, lead also being the less noble material acts as an anode protecting the cast iron. It’s incredible the amount of load that has been exerted on this MED, used for extracting bogged, buried or trapped underground machinery such as LHD loaders and boggers safely.

Date 1989
Glasgow Engineering assisted with the restoration of the Longford Water Pump along with the Longford Rotary Club as part of the Bicentennial celebrations. The original contract was awarded on the 24th August 1899 for the manufacture of a water pump for the Longford Water Trust. This was part of Longford’s earliest reticulated water supply and was first located downstream on site at Affleck’s water mills and driven by water turbine. The original contract price was Β£1,500. The pump as it is seen today shows the use of cast herringbone gears. Herringbone gears were invented by AndrΓ© CitroΓ«n, and the car manufacturer uses a representation of this as their emblem. A herringbone gear, also known as a double helical gear, is a special type of gear which is a side to side (not face to face) combination of two helical gears of opposite hands. Unlike helical gears they can sustain axial load smoothly. From the top the helical grooves of this gear looks like letter V. Like helical gears, they have the advantage of transferring power smoothly as multiple gear teeth engage and disengage simultaneously. Their advantage over the helical gears is that the side-thrust of one half is balanced by that of the other half. This means that herringbone gears can be used in torque gearboxes without requiring a substantial thrust bearing.
