MDC Building Group | Venus Bay Home Extension

A coastal home extension where timber is the defining material throughout — floors, ceilings, window frames, and pelmets working together to create a space that is entirely at one with its surroundings. Set high on the landscape with uninterrupted green treetop views stretching back toward the coast, the extension was designed to bring the outside in at every opportunity.

Floor-to-ceiling windows flank the space on all sides. A stone feature wall and raised stone platform anchor a white iron fireplace as the interior centrepiece — the contrast between raw stone and painted iron a deliberate and refined design choice.

The final detail — suspended lighting above a custom timber pool table. A space that is as functional as it is considered. Built for living, built for longevity.

MDC Building Group | Fish Creek, South Gippsland

A custom build positioned to capture 360-degree views across the rolling hills of South Gippsland, the coastline, and Wilsons Promontory beyond.

The interior palette was designed to respond directly to that landscape — caramel stone, cream marble bench tops, and deep charcoal cabinetry framed by black-finished window joinery.

The result is a kitchen where every material references the view it faces. Texture, tone, and finish working together.

The existing home flows seamlessly into the new extension, anchored by a stone-base fireplace and opened up through floor-to-ceiling glazing to the expansive views outside.

Marcellin College, Bulleen, Melbourne. In collaboration with Branch Studio Architects.

Originally, the client wanted to knock down the original structure — a two-storey building that hadn’t changed much since the 1970s. But understanding the astronomical costs that approach would incur, the architects worked with the client on a vision that would utilise, but completely transform, the structural bones of the existing building. 

What followed was a large-scale renovation involving a full roof replacement, new façade cladding with polycarbonate panels backlit to illuminate the building in the evenings, and the levelling of a severely undulating concrete floor across 850 square metres. 

Featuring a curved design, MDC Building Group completed the detailed joinery offsite to ensure all dimensions were precise and fit perfectly — creating a flawless flow through the space.

The school’s main switchboard was relocated, with new power run underground through the carpark and across the driveway, through rock and around existing services, to keep the school’s server running throughout construction. 

At the heart of the design is a gathering circle — drawing on centuries of oratory and learning traditions, from Greek amphitheatres to contemporary teaching culture — to create connected, student-centred spaces that facilitate social life, learning, and knowledge sharing. 

The result is a space that inspires from the moment you walk in.

Gallery for a Tree. Marcellin College.

A project defined by precision, collaboration, and respect for what was already there — an incredible Lemon Scented Gumtree that shaped the entire design around it.

Working alongside architect Farrel Wray, structural engineer Ipsum Structures, and an exceptional network of trade partners, we delivered a fully insitu concrete structure. With an open-air eclipse at its core, surrounded by curved glass and Galvanized balustrades, all while protecting the tree that has stood on this site long before construction began.

This is what happens when design intent and construction ex*****on align at every stage. Well done and thankyou to everyone involved.

Set on a rare piece of land in Fish Creek & framed by Wilsons Promontory — This home was built to honour the land on which it stands.

This off-grid residence is a masterclass in thoughtful design // Three bedrooms. Two bathrooms. A study, butler’s pantry, and a climate-controlled wine and cheese room — all positioned to capture the panoramic views.

At its heart: a rammed earth kitchen, dining, and living zone with raked ceilings and walls of glass that open to a covered entertaining area and paved terrace.

Messmate timber, milled from the family farm, flows through the joinery and the handcrafted entry door — grounding the home in its landscape 🏡

Cemintel Barestone, rammed earth, and charcoal split-face blockwork finish the exterior, so the home doesn’t just sit in the landscape. It has become a part of it.
