There is no room for error when a component is heading into orbit. 🚀

Last night Channel 7 News Perth featured the Binar Space Program, and we couldn't be prouder. We machined the frames for the Binar satellites, delivering the tight tolerances and material precision that spaceflight hardware demands.

These are Western Australia's first satellites, designed and built at Curtin University, with frames CNC machined right here in Perth. From Binar-1 to the missions now aboard the International Space Station, it is proof of what local advanced manufacturing can deliver.

A customer sent us a well-designed aluminium part. Good tolerances, nothing wrong with it.

Our machinist spotted one thing. The inside wall geometry forced a tool path that added time on every pass. A minor change to that profile, no effect on function or dimensions, and the job ran significantly faster. Lower cost on every piece, multiplied across the whole run.

That's design for manufacture in practice. We review every design across CNC machining, 3D printing and electronics before we make a single part, because the cheapest time to fix something is before it's cut.

Sometimes the win is cost. Sometimes it's fewer parts and less risk of damage during assembly. Sometimes it's a smarter component that performs identically for less.

If you're planning to scale a design, it pays to have people who actually make things look at it first.

Design for manufacture (DFM) is the process of reviewing and refining a design so that it can be produced as efficiently as possible.
