The hardest decision of 2026: freestanding or built-in bath? 🛀🏼
It’s one of those selections that seems purely aesthetic at first… until you start thinking about space, cleaning, cost, storage and how the bathroom will actually function day to day.
Here’s what to consider:
Freestanding bath
Pros:
- Creates a strong visual feature in the bathroom
- Offers more design flexibility with placement and shape
- Works well in larger bathrooms where the bath has room to 'breathe'
- Can soften the space with a more sculptural, relaxed look
- Great for creating a resort style or statement ensuite feel
Cons:
- Usually needs more floor space around it
- Can be harder to clean behind and underneath
- No built in ledge for products, candles or towels
- Plumbing placement needs to be carefully planned
- Can feel impractical in tighter bathrooms if the proportions aren’t right
Built-in bath
Pros:
- Often more practical for family bathrooms
- Easier to clean around, especially when properly tiled into the wall
- Can include ledges, niches or built in storage
- Makes better use of space in smaller bathrooms
- Can feel more integrated with the overall bathroom design
- Often better for kids bathrooms, where splash zones and access matter
Cons:
- Can require more construction, framing, waterproofing and tiling detail
- Less flexible once the layout is locked in
- May not create the same 'statement' look as a freestanding bath
- Needs careful design to avoid looking heavy or boxed in
Our take?
Neither option is automatically better.
A freestanding bath can be a good choice when the room has the space, scale and layout to support it. A built-in bath is often the smarter choice when practicality, storage and long term function are the priority.
As always, the right selection comes back to how the home will be lived in, not just how it looks in the photos.
