Mammoth Movers Pitches Innovative Solution for Robe Obelisk Relocation | The Robe Obelisk, a 165-year-old icon of South Australia’s Limestone Coast, has been a vital navigational aid for sailors since 1852. In recent times it has become an iconic tourism drawcard for travellers and a recommended stop on the South Australian Tourism Commission Limestone Coast Itinerary.

Perched on the rugged cliffs, it holds deep historical significance for the Robe community. However, due to coastal erosion, the obelisk is now at risk, and the District Council of Robe has set up a working party to explore the best option to save this important landmark.

The first photo shows the current extent of the headland, while the black and white image from 1919 illustrates the significant rate of erosion over the past century, giving a clear indication of how much the coastline has retreated and the urgent need to protect the Robe Obelisk from damage.

We are excited to be one of the three options currently being explored for the obelisk’s relocation.
The group is considering:
1. Dismantling and rebuilding the obelisk at a new location.
2. Relocating the entire structure (our Mammoth Movers proposal).
3. Building a replica in a new location.

Our proposal offers a creative, low-impact solution that involves cutting the obelisk into sections, securing it with a custom-built frame, and airlifting the structure via helicopter to a new site. Once relocated, the sections will be reassembled using a crane.

Key Benefits of Our Proposal:
- Minimal disruption to the Robe headland.
- Reduced environmental impact, avoiding heavy machinery or track construction.
- Prefabrication of the frame allows for faster setup with minimal onsite work.
- Efficient use of resources: the helicopter would be required for just a few hours, while a crane handles reassembly.
- Cost-effective compared to traditional relocation methods.

We’re excited to be one of the options under review and hope to move forward with a full feasibility study to finalise the plan and budget.

Technology Spotlight: Hydraulic Dollies || Hydraulic dollies are essential for relocating masonry structures, offering incredible versatility and strength. Available in two main types—trailer dollies and self-propelled hydraulic dollies—these tools are designed with vertical hydraulic rams and oscillating front axles, allowing them to navigate uneven terrain with ease.

With a typical safe working load of 40-50 tonnes, just three dollies can move structures over 100 tonnes! Their low-profile design keeps loads close to the ground, avoiding obstacles like power lines and bridges.

These dollies can be self-steering, manually steered, or set in caster mode to follow the lead dollies, much like a shopping trolley. By linking them in zones, they maintain consistent loads across uneven ground, ensuring smooth, safe relocations.

Modular and highly adaptable, hydraulic dollies offer unmatched flexibility—supporting loads where needed, moving structures in any direction, and even rotating them around a central point. It’s like moving buildings on a cushion of oil.

At Mammoth Movers, we maintain a fleet of 16 hydraulic dolly units, capable of being augmented with additional equipment from our global partners for larger or more complex projects. This equipment was instrumental in the successful relocation of the Hornsby Signal Box, where we demonstrated the precision and control required to rotate the structure to execute a tight and challenging relocation scenario.

The attached video illustrates the technical prowess of our hydraulic dollies in action.

Thanks to our project partners Laing O'Rourke, CCG Architects and Transport Construction Authority for a successful project that was nominated for the Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Awards.
