I’m big on pragmatism, essentialism, and focusing on value over rigid process.
This is why I’ve always been frustrated by quality management systems.
I vowed when I started my own company that we would never be burdened by unnecessary documentation, registers and documents that no one would ever look at, and drafting issue reports that take longer than just fixing the issue in the first place.
Despite feeling that way, Xentronics is now ISO 9001 certified and have built our own quality management system from the ground-up over 2 years.
Why?
It took me years of being accountable for every deliverable, every action, and every output we produced to realise how important quality is in any business.
When you ensure quality, you ensure clients are satisfied - that’s something any business should strive for.
The challenge is understanding what “quality management” means in your context. Too many companies borrow that from one another, and you end up with a system that just doesn’t make sense for a given business.
It turns out, I never had a problem with “quality” or “quality management”
It was just the “systems”.
