Last week, rooftop solar came within 0.1% of powering the whole of South Australia.
On 31 August, SA needed just 2MW of grid backup at 1:30pm — everything else, 99.9% of demand, was met by solar on ordinary rooftops. It happened alongside a new record-low for minimum operational demand on the National Electricity Market, with rooftop solar contributing roughly 54% of underlying demand across the state.

Big news for Australian businesses: the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) cap has been raised from 100kW to 1MW.

Announced by Minister Chris Bowen and welcomed by the Clean Energy Council, this change means commercial and industrial businesses can now access rebates on much larger solar systems — expected to take effect from 1 October 2026, subject to regulations.

Large industrial sites could save up to $228,000 a year on power bills
Systems and expansions up to 1MW combined capacity are now eligible
Hundreds of thousands of C&I businesses now qualify
The 5-year deeming rate locks in until 2030
