In San Diego earlier this month, Dr Mukesh Ahuja, Global Head of Paradigm Biopharmaceuticals' OA program, presented recent exciting top-line results generating intense interest at the American College of Rheumatology’s ACR Convergence conference, one of the world’s most prestigious rheumatology meetings.

Dr Ahuja’s presentation “Therapeutic Effects of Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium on Clinical and Disease Modifying Outcomes in Subjects with Knee Osteoarthritis” covered key results from the 008 phase 2 clinical trial. As of 2022, the global market for osteoarthritis therapeutics was valued at $8.28 billion and is expected to more than double to approximately $20.4 billion by 2032. Paradigm Biopharmaceuticals' iPPS development program recently released results demonstrating that a single 6-week course of subcutaneous iPPS is able to reduce pain and improve function out to at least 12 months, a completely novel result in OA therapy. Also interviewed was specialist Sports Physician Dr Philip Bloom, the lead investigator of the recent phase 2 clinical trial that demonstrated measurable changes in the knees of people with moderate to severe knee OA. Participants received the trial medication twice a week for six weeks and were investigated at several time points out to 1 year. Even more remarkably, the investigative drug showed positive effects on pain and function at 12 months, a first for any kind of osteoarthritis therapy.

One in three Australians lives with a debilitating musculoskeletal condition like back pain, arthritis or one of 150 other painful muscle, bone and joint conditions. These musculoskeletal conditions are the third highest contributor to the national non-fatal burden of disease in the country, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare - AIHW.

The non-profit national organisation Musculoskeletal Australia - MSK aims to lift the ‘cloak of invisibility’ surrounding these disorders with today’s Rattle Ya Bones Day launch of the Australia-wide 2023 National Musculoskeletal Consumer Survey.
