🚄 Kananook Stabling Yard Expansion Completed for Melbourne’s New Train Fleet!

The first of Melbourne’s new X'Trapolis 2.0 passenger trains entered passenger service in May 2026.

ACCIONA, as lead contractor with joint venture partners, delivered the second stage of the Kananook Stabling Yard expansion in Melbourne, ensuring the network was ready for the introduction of the X'Trapolis 2.0 trains.

The project increased capacity from 8 to 21 trains, creating essential space to accommodate a significant portion of the initial 25 new-generation trains that are part of the Victorian Government’s investment in public transport.

Upgrades include a modern maintenance shed, wash facilities and improved network connections. These enhancements enable higher service frequencies and support the Metro Tunnel’s high-capacity signalling systems.

Delivering the works ahead of the fleet’s rollout ensures the infrastructure is in place to maintain and service the new trains efficiently. This preparation helps provide a more reliable network for passengers across Melbourne’s busiest corridors.

The expanded facility is more than a stabling yard. It is a fully functional operational hub designed to meet future demand and improve long-term resilience for the city’s growing transport needs.

By modernising critical infrastructure, the project supports safer, more efficient journeys for commuters and strengthens the overall performance of Melbourne’s suburban rail system.

New Mordialloc Station Opens on the Frankston Line!

ACCIONA has celebrated the opening of the new Mordialloc Station in Melbourne, marking a major milestone for the Frankston line and the surrounding community.

Trains are now running on an elevated viaduct, and two level crossings – one at McDonald Street Moridialloc, and the other at Station Street Aspendale – have been removed. These changes improve traffic flow and safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The project delivered two new rail viaducts, all new mainline rail and sidings, and a new Nepean Highway link road. These upgrades enhance connectivity and reduce congestion for local residents.

The station design reflects Mordialloc’s beachside character, with native landscaping, sculptural verandas, and the preserved heritage water tower as a precinct centrepiece. These features create a sense of place while honouring local history.

Continuing works focus on landscaping, car parking, and improved pedestrian and cyclist connections. In nearby Aspendale, upgrades include a new turning circle near Mordialloc College for safer school access, along with additional parking and intersection improvements.

This milestone enhances safety, accessibility, and community amenity while supporting Melbourne’s ongoing Level Crossing Removal Project.

MASSIVE transformers on the move for HumeLink East.

ACCIONA has facilitated a major logistics operation in regional New South Wales, enabling the transport of critical electrical equipment for the HumeLink East project.

ACCIONA and partner Plus Group are delivering HumeLink East for

A 134-tonne shunt reactor was successfully transported from Port Kembla to Transgrid’s 500kV substation at Bannaby in the NSW Southern Tablelands in early May.

The reactor is some of the largest and most advanced equipment in Australia’s transmission network and needed a 66-metre-long trailer to be transported.

Once operational it will help stabilise electricity flow and enable the transfer of renewable energy across New South Wales, supporting millions of homes and businesses.

The transport operation required months of planning and close coordination with multiple agencies including Transgrid, Transport for NSW, NSW Police, local Councils and regulators.

Crews navigated steep gradients, narrow roads and bridges using three prime movers, pilot vehicles and police escorts to ensure safety throughout the journey.

This milestone reflects ACCIONA’s ability to manage complex, end-to-end delivery processes that keep major infrastructure projects on track while working closely with stakeholders.

AI innovation transforms safety planning on-site

We won the 2026 Best WHS Innovation and Improvement Award at the Hunter Safety Awards in Newcastle recently, for our AI-powered Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) tool!
Streamlining safety documentation and strengthening risk management across our projects.

The tool replaces a paper-heavy process with a guided digital system that creates SWMS in minutes instead of weeks.

Built-in logic supports teams in selecting risk controls, reducing administrative effort and improving consistency across multiple sites.

Previously, preparing SWMS could take up to two weeks and hours of admin work each month. Now, those hours are redirected to on-site safety, giving teams more time to manage real risks.

The system was developed with input from engineers, supervisors, safety specialists and subcontractors. This collaborative approach ensured the tool reflects practical needs and is easy to use on the ground.

Testing took place on projects including the Western Harbour Tunnel, Rockhampton Ring Road, M80 and Singleton Bypass. These trials helped refine the tool, so it supports local knowledge while maintaining alignment across projects.

The result is faster documentation, improved engagement with safety processes and a cultural shift towards proactive risk management.

By making safety easier to navigate, the tool helps frontline teams take ownership of critical decisions in real time.

🚰 Designing better water through smarter engineering!

ACCIONA, as Lead Constructor, is working with Water Corporation and Jacobs to integrate a groundwater treatment plant into the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Perth to improve drinking water quality and reduce long-term chemical use.

This approach blends treated groundwater with desalinated water to achieve balanced, stable drinking water.

It means quality is optimised through engineering decisions that benefit households across Perth’s northern growth corridors.

Up to 50% fewer chemicals are expected to be required to achieve potable water compared with traditional desalination post-treatment methods.

This reduction matters - because it improves operational efficiency while lowering handling requirements and long-term environmental impact.

Desalinated water is extremely pure but needs minerals reintroduced to be suitable for consumption.

At Alkimos, filtered groundwater with natural hardness provides calcium and magnesium that help stabilise pH, alkalinity and hardness.

The integrated design allows post-treatment chemicals to be applied only when required to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. This creates more consistent outcomes and reduces reliance on corrective processes.

Early inclusion of the groundwater treatment plant has simplified operations as production scales up. It also strengthens safety and performance across the full life of this critical infrastructure.

This is the first desalination plant of this scale in Western Australia to use groundwater blending as the primary method for final water quality. The result is a more climate-resilient, reliable drinking water supply built to meet growing demand.

We are proud to see how thoughtful engineering choices can deliver sustainable outcomes for communities, today and into the future.

Major Concrete Pour Advances Alkimos Desalination.

The Alkimos Seawater Alliance (ASWA), led by ACCIONA, Water Corporation and Jacobs, achieved a key milestone at the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant earlier this year, with the completion of the southern shaft topping slab.

This progress strengthens Perth’s path toward a new climate independent water source.

The team delivered one of the project’s most complex concrete activities with a 13-hour continuous pour.

The slab placed 600 cubic metres of concrete across a 30 metre by 30 metre footprint, supporting the seawater intake system that feeds the desalination process.

Crews began work before sunrise with pumps arriving at 4.00 am and the first concrete placed at 5.00 am.

Two boom pumps maintained a steady supply from the ASWA and Wanneroo concrete batch plants.

Ahead of the pour, teams installed 260 tonnes of reinforcement to ensure structural performance.

A group of 35 workers completed the operation under favourable conditions. Strong environmental controls supported compliance for a water retaining structure, and finishing teams delivered the slab by evening.

This milestone enabled the next phase of construction by the Alliance, including mechanical pump installation, instrumentation and monitoring services, and structural steel and precast assembly.

Each step brings Perth closer to securing safe and reliable drinking water.

The achievement reflects the teamwork and technical capability of ASWA in driving momentum at Alkimos.
