Ever wondered how glass can be recycled and reused again and again? Here's what we mean by infinitely recyclable at Orora Glass in Gawler, SA.

At Orora, every glass bottle moves through a continuous circular journey, from raw materials and melting through to moulding, filling and consumers, before returning as recycled glass ready to become a new bottle.

Because recycled glass (cullet) melts at a lower temperature than raw materials, it can help reduce energy use during manufacturing while keeping glass in circulation.

Glass is one of the few packaging materials that can be reused many times over and then recycled without any loss in quality. That combination is exactly why Schulz Organic Dairy wanted a returnable glass bottle, and why they'd spent a long time looking for an Australian manufacturing partner to help build one.

Once we teamed up with Schulz, our team saw room to improve their current imported glass bottle design. This became the starting point for a bottle built specifically for the demands of a returnable system: repeated rinsing, refilling, and transportation.

Our design and manufacturing teams paid close attention to the details: a rounded profile for stability in the fridge, an easy-to-hold grip, and even glass distribution engineered for strength. Each bottle is designed to go through dozens of reuse cycles before it's eventually recycled.

The can end is one of the most frequently touched parts of any pack, so it has to work exactly right, every time.

It starts as raw aluminium, shaped and finished into a ring-pull tab that's simple to open by hand, yet secure enough to hold the internal pressure of a carbonated beverage. Every end is checked for precision under close inspection, then confirmed by hand before it ever reaches a filling line.

Beyond function, the can end is an often-underused branding asset. Coloured ends and laser-incised tabs turn that same component into shelf standout, supporting limited editions, seasonal campaigns and flavour variants.

A can goes through more checks than most people realise before it ever reaches a shelf.

✅ Our quality assurance teams inspect for dimensional accuracy, seam integrity and decoration quality, backed by automated inspection systems and technicians who know exactly what to look for.

It’s also why Orora runs two or more can lines at every major site across the eastern seaboard: reliability shouldn’t depend on a single line staying up. Swipe through for a look at what happens before your can leaves our facility.

Glass can be melted down and remade without losing strength, clarity or quality, no matter how many times it goes through the process. That’s the short answer to why it’s infinitely recyclable.

The longer answer comes down to its structure. Unlike some materials, glass doesn’t break down or weaken when it’s reheated, so recycled glass (cullet) can replace raw materials in the furnace without compromising the final product. Cullet also melts at a lower temperature than raw silica sand, limestone and soda ash, so every 10% of recycled glass added to our process cuts CO2 emissions by around 5% and energy use by around 3%.

🌟 Congratulations to Tahlia Graetz, Glass Maintenance Supervisor at Orora, named Rising Star at the 2026 PKN Women in Packaging Awards.

Tahlia joined Orora in 2021 through our engineering cadetship program, balancing shift work with a Mechanical Engineering degree and rotations across multiple departments. She went on to help commission Orora’s first oxyfuel unit supporting our G3 furnace, working as one of the first trained operators and later training shift technicians across the site.

It’s a well-earned recognition of her technical skill and leadership, and a good example of the people driving Orora’s manufacturing capability forward.

Orora's 'right weighting' program has proven that reducing the body weight of our aluminium cans is possible. In FY25, we successfully reduced the body weight of our 375ml aluminium cans.

💡 Why have we done this? Even a modest change, when applied at scale, can make a big impact. Less aluminium per can means less raw material per production and a lighter product moving through the supply chain across every unit produced.

As we work toward completion of our capacity expansion in Australia, we continue to invest in sustainable growth and innovation, solutions including the commitment and enablement of right weighting cans.

As part of our promise to the future, Orora is dedicated to delivering sustainable packaging to the hands of consumers. Right weighting doesn't change what's inside the can or how it performs. It simply reduces the amount of material needed to make it, helping support our customers' decarbonisation goals across Australia and New Zealand.
