It’s often the custom details that make a renovation feel truly considered.

For this project, we introduced custom black steel doors with fluted glass panel in the centre to separate the hallway from the open-plan kitchen and living area. They create a beautiful sense of separation without closing the spaces off, allowing light to flow through while adding a strong architectural statement.

We also incorporated a stone cut-out using the same material as the kitchen benchtops. A small detail, but one that makes a big impact, creating a visual connection between the spaces and tying the design together.

For us, it’s these thoughtful touches that elevate a renovation. Practical, purposeful and designed to feel like they belong exactly where they are.

We believe renovation is about giving a home a new lease on life while making thoughtful choices about what can be retained and reused.

Sustainability is an important part of our approach at SEMMbuild. Wherever possible, we look for opportunities to reuse existing materials rather than sending them to landfill and replacing them with new ones.

At our Hawthorn East project, the existing bricks were carefully cleaned and reused to create the new external wall with the help of Reclaimed Group. Not only did this reduce waste, it helped tie the new work seamlessly into the existing home.

For us, it’s about making considered choices throughout the build. Reusing materials can reduce landfill, minimise the need for new resources and give existing materials a second life.

A great renovation isn’t always about what we add — it’s also about what we can preserve and reuse.

Renovating older homes often comes with discovering the stories hidden within them.

During the renovation of this California Bungalow in Bentleigh, we uncovered old newspapers dating back to the 1930s — a little time capsule from the home’s past.

Rather than removing them and moving on, the owners wanted to keep that piece of history alive. So, the newspapers were carefully preserved and transformed into wallpaper, creating a completely unique feature within the renovated home’s powder room.

Renovation doesn’t always have to mean replacing the old with the new. Sometimes, the most meaningful design choices come from celebrating what’s already there, and preserving this piece of the home’s story was an incredibly meaningful part of the journey.

One of the standout features of our recent Murrumbeena project is the large open-plan living and dining area, built to give the family more room to live, gather and entertain.

The raked ceiling is doing more than creating visual impact. By lifting the ceiling line with this room addition, we’ve helped flood the space with natural light while giving the room a sense of height and openness that makes it feel even larger.

It’s a great example of how thoughtful a small detail can completely change the way an extension feels. We’re not just adding square metres, but creating a space that feels light, connected and generous.

For us, the best extensions are the ones that make you wonder how the home ever worked without them.
