We had a great day at the Melbourne 4x4 Show last week, catching up with clients and seeing some of the projects we’ve been involved with come together in the real world.
 
It’s always a great change of pace for the team to step away from the computer, attend an event and see the end result of the engineering work that happens behind the scenes.
 
Our top picks of the day were the Fekete Fabrications PRF-1 prerunner and Marks4WD Ranger Super Duty on portals. 
 
We also loved seeing the creativity, innovation and engineering that goes into the incredible range of builds on display.

It was a great day out and a reminder of why we love what we do.

What happens when extreme impact loads meet engineering simulation?
 
In one of our case studies, we investigated the impact of a high-velocity material load on a large industrial hopper.
 
The challenge was to understand how the structure would respond to an extreme impact and determine whether the design could withstand the resulting forces.
 
Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in Siemens Radioss, combined with Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), we were able to simulate the interaction between the material and the structure.
 
SPH is particularly useful for modelling materials that behave like fluids or granular materials, allowing their movement and interaction with a structure to be analysed during an impact event.
 
The simulation provided insight into:
• Impact behaviour and load transfer
• Structural stresses and deformation
• Areas requiring additional strength
• Potential design improvements

Importantly, the analysis also helped develop a simpler approximation of the impact loads that could be used for future designs, reducing the need for complex simulations every time.
 
Simulation isn’t just about understanding what happens. It’s about using that information to make better engineering decisions.

VSB14 Suspension Assessment
 
How do you know a modified suspension system can handle the loads it will experience on the road?
 
VSB14 provides guidelines for assessing suspension, steering and related components, including the loads they need to withstand and how suspension geometry should behave throughout its range of movement.
 
At Bremar Automotion, we can use a combination of FEA and Multibody Dynamics (MBD) to assess these systems virtually.

Our analysis can include:
• Bump, braking and cornering loads
• Component stresses and strength
• Full suspension and steering travel
• Camber and toe changes
• Bump steer and roll steer
• Springs, bumpstops and flexible bushes

This allows us to assess both component strength and suspension behaviour before committing to physical testing or new hardware.

Simulation also gives us the opportunity to test different design and material options, helping identify potential issues and refine a system early in the development process.
 
VSB14 compliance is about more than making sure components are strong. It is also about understanding how the suspension behaves.

Ever wondered how you safely double the reach of a 100-tonne excavator?
 
When RK Findlay Engineering needed to extend a Komatsu excavator arm from 14m to 29m for underwater profiling work at Port Kembla’s outer harbour, they partnered with us to validate the design before it hit the field.
 
Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), we assessed stress, displacement and structural performance across a range of load cases, ensuring the modified boom and dipper arm were ready for the job.
 
With a solid design from RK Findlay Engineering and engineering refinements guided by FEA, the final solution met every performance target.

Suspension doing what suspension does best... going up and down. 😁
 
This animation started with a 3D scan to capture the suspension hardpoints, followed by a multibody dynamics simulation in Siemens MotionSolve to analyse the kinematics. We then brought it all to life with a photo-realistic render in Inspire Studio.
