Night-time visibility at regional and rural level crossings presents a significant safety challenge for drivers and riders.

You asked for it! The results of our Smarterlite photoluminescent line markings test on the Bulli Pass are in and it’s been deemed a success.

200m stretch of line markings have been installed partway down the steep descent to increase awareness of the sharp bend, resulting in a 67% drop in nighttime near misses

And 83% of drivers surveyed said the glow provided “increased peace of mind” when navigating the treacherous bend.

Size, shape, colours and environmental conditions are all factors!

And just like bright full-beam headlights in fog cause glare, the same happens with bright emergency lights and bright exit signs in smoky conditions.

In Australia, photoluminescent exit signs must meet NCC requirements, including being larger and above 30md/m2 luminance for at least 90 minutes during power failures.

Smarterlite’s Environmental Exit Signs exceed all requirements.

In fact, photoluminescent exit signs could be considered more reliable than failure-prone old-tech battery exit signs.

Photoluminescent technology draws upon light to charge and maintain visibility.

If the battery in an old-tech battery-powered exit sign is flat, this exit sign isn’t visible in the dark at all.

If it’s a dual-purpose battery exit sign that has a flat battery, this means no exit sign and no emergency light.

This means neither will provide useful visibility - from the start of any emergency.
