Do you live in a flight path? Are you planning a development which may be affected by a nearby airport?

Since airports often operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week, noise from aircrafts can be constant, and typically, aircraft noise can be anywhere from 65 to 96 decibels.

This is why the Australian Standard 2021 Aircraft Intrusion publication is important. This standard guides professionals in designing new buildings to achieve appropriate internal noise levels in particular areas and at certain times.

Acoustic consultants use testing and flight path mapping to determine the existing levels and predicted noise intrusion to determine the best procedures and mitigation protocol to be taken during the construction phase.

Thus, people can live peacefully within close range of an airport.

Have you heard of the Melbourne Airport Noise Tool?

The Melbourne Airport offers a clever online tool for you to estimate how noise from the operation of Melbourne Airport may affect you.

You can enter your suburb or address into the system and receive information about current potential impact, and how their future plans may change the acoustic impact on your location.

It can inform you if you live under a flight path, the estimated number of flights over your property and more!

If you are concerned about the impact aircraft noise is having on your house or a proposed development, contact us today for an obligation-free quote!

Flight Paths Across Victoria

BRIEF
Living under a flight path can be a challenge, especially as you get closer to the airport and the planes are closer to the ground, and hence – your house! The team at Waveform Acoustics has worked closely with developers and residents this year affected by many airports in Victoria including Moorabbin, Shepperton, Essendon and Tullamarine.

SOLUTION
In order to mitigate noise intrusion inside houses, as per the Australian Standards for Aircraft Noise Intrusion, we conduct testing and evaluate predicted noise levels from various models of aircraft and average distance from residences.

RESULT
With client consultation, we provide recommendations to build or renovate houses to comply with the Australian Standards and thus increase liveability in these properties. Some common recommendations include external wall, ceiling and window specifications.

If you live under a flight path or are planning a development near an airport, contact us today to find out how best to solve noise intrusion!

Keeping essential childcare services compliant!

Childcare centres are popular, and we often receive calls from potential clients who require an acoustic assessment performed before their plans for creation or renovation of existing infrastructure can proceed.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) requires any commercial venues potentially emitting noise to comply with publication 1826.4. This is why we conduct detailed testing of background limits in order to ensure new builds won't breach these existing conditions.

With childcare centres in particular, it's important to consider the location of carparks and drop-off zones, which may be used for early or late pick-ups and potentially disturb nearby residents. Likewise, the indoor-outdoor play arrangement must take into account who will be nearest to fences and what kind of mitigation might be necessary to prevent outdoor play from acoustically intruding into residential areas.

With the assistance of an experienced acoustic consultant, you can ensure that all the regulations are met, preventing any breaches and need for additional mitigation works in the future.

If you are designing, tendering, or live near a childcare centre and would like to know more about the current regulations and how we can help you, contact us today!

Did you know it is harder for children to understand speech in a noisy environment than adults?

Classrooms can be noisy, and recent research has found that children are even more sensitive to background noise than adults. This can include having trouble hearing teachers and distinguishing instructions.

This is why it is so important to consider internal acoustics of childcare centres and schools as well as the impact externally!

Childcare Centre | Doncaster

BRIEF
This year, Waveform Acoustics was engaged by the team at a proposed childcare centre in Doncaster. As it was set to be developed in a suburban area, the developers had to ensure there would be no negative acoustic impact on the surrounding residents.

SOLUTION
Our team worked with the client to determine background noise limits and the amount of noise expected at the hours and numbers of children expected on the premises. With childcare centres, it is important to consider the indoor and outdoor noise produced, as well as the impact the drop-off zone may have.

RESULT
If the new childcare implemented all the tailored requirements we outlined for them in the report, they would be able to run the centre smoothly without concern for exceeding noise compliance limits.
