G6 Rhino Howitzer (South Africa) (Working Diorama)

This is a summary of the scale model build of the G6 Rhino 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer. The G6 was developed by South African Defence Force in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, specifically for use in the northern Namibia desert, in the Angolan bush conflict.

The base kit is Takom Model, in 1:35 scale. The diorama represents the desert in northern Namibia into Angola.

This G6 Rhino kit is highly modified inside, scratch-build fitted with 4 servos, 2 motors, and LEDs, for automation. The automation was done using an Arduino Controller and C-code Programming.

RAF Lancaster "S" for "Sugar" Scale Model 1:32 scale

This is a summary of the scale model build of a Lancaster Mk1, titled “S for Sugar”
It is a Hachette Partworks magazine subscription kit of 125 issues from 2010 / 2011.
This 1:32 scale model is finished as a wireframe; with bulkheads, frames, ribs and stringers, with no skin.

NAM (Northern Area Modellers) Club Meeting was yesterday evening (Sat 20 June).
A few absentees form the regulars, due to flue, weather, family events etc.
We had a good discussion about the recent Model Expo 2026 event.
We tabled a few ideas for next Expo 2027, for further discussion.

Hi Friends

This is the scale model build of a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
This model is 1/7 scale, with a wingspan of 60” (5 ft, or 1.5m).
This P-40 is the Top Flite "Red Box" Model, made in the USA circa 1975.
The kit was intended for full Radio Control “Stand-off” competition.
The kit was manufactured in about 1975, so the wood is very brittle, and the vinyl decals very old.

I decided to build it for show, not for flying. I wanted to add all the Radio Control servo’s in, with a small electric motor for the prop, for effect.
I wanted to show as much of the original wood as possible, so the camo green is on part of the outside, the rest is the wood to view.

Hi Friends

Douglas Skyraider A-1H (US Navy).

This is a summary of the scale model build of the Douglas Skyraider A-1H as deployed by the US Navy in the ’60’s.
This model is shown deployed in Vietnam, on the deck of the USS Midway.
The kit is Tamiya, in 1:48 scale.
The folded wings on the diorama turned out great!

At last - my P40 Warhawk is complete!

1/7 Scale. Wingspan 5' (60" or 1.5m).
Wood (mostly balsa) construction.
Kit is TopFlite, 1955-ish.
This kit manufactured in 1975, so wood is 50 years old, and very brittle.
Airplane is built for show, not for Radio Control flight.
Full RC kit is installed. All surfaces operate.
Electric motor (limited to 100RPM).
Nav and cabin lights.
Finish is camo green, and rest to show maximum wood.
Main USAF decals and Shark-mouth is air-brushed.
Proudly on display in my Office/Workshop :)

This is a quick-build of the Mercedes SUV ML500.
The kit is from Doyusha, in 1:48 scale.
I purchased this kit at a swap-meet, for the princely sum of only 5 dollars.
The kit comes with the main body sections fully painted.
A bit of hand painting added for detail.
Total build time about 4 hours.
A great kit from the Japanese company Doyusha Model Kits.

This is a scale model of the English Electric Canberra Aircraft, as operational by Australian RAAF, an Airfix kit, in 1:48 scale.
The aircraft top is three-colour camouflage, with black underneath, for night-strikes.
The Canberra Aircraft is displayed in a simple diorama, in flight over Vietnam, circa 1970.
