Kleinfelder’s geotechnical engineering team recently supported a client in South Australia with a site with compressible soils and a high risk of differential settlement that made their proposed shallow footings design unfeasible.

Through detailed in‑situ testing, impact rolling assessment, and proof rolling, our team identified a targeted ground improvement solution, which combined impact rolling with localised soil excavation and replacement using engineered fill and stabilised sand. This approach allowed the ground conditions to be improved and validated for shallow foundations.

By enabling the use of shallow footings instead of piling, the project achieved significant cost savings and a more efficient construction outcome, without compromising performance.

Kleinfelder’s geotechnical engineering team’s paper will be featured in the 2026 Piling and Ground Improvement Conference’s Journal.

The paper presents a practical case study on impact rolling as a ground improvement technique under variable soil conditions, highlighting the technique’s effectiveness in granular soils, its limitations in cohesive materials, and the importance of verification testing and targeted remediation to enable the use of shallow foundations. The findings offer valuable insights for practitioners dealing with heterogeneous ground conditions on commercial development sites. Kleinfelder Principal Engineer, Greg Lutton, will be representing us at the South Australia Major Projects Conference on 4-5 May.

With a continued focus on the future transformation of Newcastle and surrounding areas, Senior Principal Consultant, Brendan Grant, and Principal Geotechnical Engineer Hadi Ajorlou, will join the High Speed Rail Authority (Australia) Industry Briefing in Newcastle on 21 April.
