450-tonne crane. Restricted access. Live hotel environment.

CTY Air Conditioning is delivering a major Central Thermal Plant Upgrade at Crowne Plaza Melbourne, working within one of the city’s most tightly constrained project environments.

Engaged by Salter Brothers, CTY has undertaken the thermal plant analysis, equipment selection, design development and delivery of a new cooling plant designed to meet the hotel’s current requirements while creating valuable rooftop space for its future transformation into InterContinental Melbourne.

With approximately 2 MW of new cooling capacity across three Daikin 667 kW air-cooled chillers, the project combines thermal engineering, complex spatial coordination and heavy-lift logistics, all while the hotel remains operational.

A major project, with plenty of moving parts.

Some projects are complex by design. Others are complex by circumstance. This one is both.

At Crowne Plaza Melbourne, CTY Air Conditioning is delivering a major central thermal plant upgrade to support the hotel’s future transformation into InterContinental Melbourne.

The existing plant is being replaced with three new Daikin 667 kW air-cooled R-32 chillers, providing approximately 2 MW of cooling capacity within a significantly reduced rooftop footprint.

The challenge? Removing existing chillers weighing up to 9 tonnes each, with a 450-tonne mobile crane, restricted access and a live hotel environment requiring carefully staged shutdowns and minimal disruption.

Engineering, coordination and ex*****on, working together to deliver what comes next.
