When the program can’t stop, response matters.

FRW Industrial was called on at short notice and worked closely with the Spectran Group team to complete the required documentation, inductions and planning, allowing our crew to mobilise to site the following day.

The result: the project kept moving without impacting productivity or the wider program.

So… a bunch of rope technicians bought a scissor lift. 😂

Have we gone soft? Not quite.

We love rope access. It gets us into places most people look at and think, how the hell are we getting someone up there? But being good at access isn’t about using ropes for everything. It’s about looking at the job in front of you and choosing the safest, smartest and most practical way to get it done.

Sometimes that means ropes. Sometimes it means scaffolding.

And apparently, sometimes it means standing comfortably on a platform and pressing the UP button. 😂

So, meet the newest addition to FRW Industrial. We’ve purchased our own scissor lift, giving the crew another option when planning jobs and reducing our reliance on hired equipment. The harnesses and ropes aren’t going anywhere.

Although the boys may take some convincing after they discover how easy this thing is.

Sometimes the best solution is simply finding another way in.

FRW Industrial was recently engaged by Spectran Group to support works at Boyer Paper Mill as part of a concrete silo dismantling project. The project involved drilling large penetrations through the silo walls, allowing specialist diamond cutting to be carried out before sections were carefully lifted out by crane.

As the works progressed, 16 drilling locations presented an access challenge using the existing scaffold arrangement. After a site visit, we identified a straightforward solution — rope access. Our team mobilised the following day and worked across the weekend to complete the remaining holes, keeping the works moving and supporting the wider dismantling program.

It’s a good example of why having different access options available matters.

Sometimes scaffolding is the answer. Sometimes it’s an EWP. And sometimes, ropes give you the ability to get people exactly where they need to be without introducing unnecessary complexity to the job.

For us, the impressive part wasn’t necessarily the drilling. It was how quickly everyone worked together to identify the problem, agree on a practical solution and get the job moving!

A great collaborative effort with the Spectran Group team, and we appreciated the opportunity to support the project.

You may be wondering why we’re showing you a photo of a life ring… 🛟

Were we thinking about branching out into water sports? Not today!

Before any job starts, there’s a fair bit that happens behind the scenes before the tools even come out. We make sure we’ve got the right people, the right equipment and, importantly, a plan for when things don’t go to plan.

When we’re working over or around water, that means asking some pretty simple but important questions: If someone ends up in the water, how do we get to them? How do we get them out? What equipment do we need? And does everyone on site know their role?

Hopefully, this life ring spends its entire working life hanging around doing absolutely nothing.

That’s the best outcome. Because when it comes to rescue planning…“She’ll be right” IS NEVER PART OF THE PLAN!

What’s something experience has taught you to always plan for?

This one was a bloody good job. We’ve just wrapped up the last of the structural strengthening works on this old girl — an iconic iron bridge that’s been standing since the 1890s. And she definitely made us work for it.

223 original rivets, all manually drilled out and replaced with structural bolts. A fair chunk of those were at height and hanging out over the water.

Around 68 metres of vertical welding, with some welds needing four passes. Sounds simple enough… until you add tight spaces, rope access and the fact you’re doing it halfway up a 130-year-old bridge.

We also cut out and replaced sections of deteriorated steel, including pieces weighing up to 250 kg. There wasn’t exactly a nice flat workshop floor to work from either, so every lift and load transfer had to be thought through properly.

Then Tasmania decided to throw some weather at us. 20–40 mm of rain forecast on some days. So naturally, we built what can only be described as a small gazebo city. Warm shelters. Dry storage. BBQ. Coffee machine.

If you’re going to battle a 130-year-old bridge in sideways rain, you may as well be comfortable doing it.

Five blokes on the crew, including two legends from Tas Precision Welding, and a hell of a lot of behind-the-scenes planning.

We are really proud of this one.

There’s something pretty special about crawling all over a piece of infrastructure built in the 1890s, strengthening it up and knowing it’ll be around for plenty more years yet.

Give us the awkward ones. We like those.

Some of the best feedback comes from the work you keep getting asked to do again.
FRW looks after the external window and panel cleaning at the St Lukes Building, 89–93 Cimitiere Street, as part of a scheduled maintenance program.
It’s a seven-storey building, so getting the job done properly means rope access, good planning and a team that can arrive on site ready, on time, to get on with it.
Each scheduled clean, our crew works their way around the building, taking care of the windows and facade panels while keeping disruption to the people using the building to a minimum. For us, that’s just how the job should run.

So it was great to receive this feedback from the client:
“FRW demonstrated a highly professional approach, arriving with all OH&S compliance documentation in hand and ready to go, which allowed works to commence without delay.”

They also highlighted the quality of the finished work, the way our team handled the rope access safely and efficiently, and the overall value of the service.
But probably the most important part for us was this:

“We would not hesitate to recommend FRW for future window and facade cleaning works and look forward to engaging them again on future projects.”
