Thanks to those people who have liked the True North Design page.

Over the coming weeks and months we intend to post a number of articles, videos and helpful documents and tools that will enable prospective home owners, builders or renovators to make more informed decisions when contemplating an investment in a family home. Building and renovating is at an all time high as far as market pricing is concerned. We believe that your money is more wisely spent if you design a building that utilises the principles of energy smart / passive design.

The principle is quite simple. The sun transitions through a well known path each season. By designing your project to allow winter sunshine into the home and keeping summer sunshine out, your home will be far more comfortable all year round. Add to this clever use of window types and glazing as well as carefully installed vapour barriers and insulation and you will own a property that far exceeds the performance of 90% of homes built today. Please keep in mind that a well designed and carefully built home will attain these high standards for the life of the building. It's a comforting thought knowing you have a home well suited to keeping the occupants comfortable for the next 50 to 100 years.

The attached video was posted by the Master Builders Association some years ago. They have done a great job explaining the basics of Smart Eco Design. ( Pareto 80/20 rule ) Get the orientation correct and you will get 80% of the benefits of Passive Solar design. Savings in long term running costs can be enormous and all blocks of land in new sub divisions are not created equal when it comes to optimal orientation. We will post more on what to look for when buying land or existing properties in future posts.
