Had one too many wines? Spilled some on your brand-new stone benchtop? Don’t panic...but move quickly!

Red wine can cause more than just a stain. Because it’s acidic, it can etch certain natural stones, particularly marble and limestone, leaving behind a dull or lighter-looking patch on the surface.

The good news? Minor etching can sometimes be polished out, restoring the surface and bringing back that original finish.

In the meantime:
- Blot, don’t wipe
- Clean the spill with water and a suitable stone cleaner
- Don’t let it sit on the surface for too long
- Avoid harsh or acidic cleaning products

And remember... etching isn't the same as staining. Sometimes that mark isn't something sitting on your stone… it's a change to the stone's surface itself.

So enjoy the wine... just keep a cloth handy, pour over the sink when you can, or use a placemat or protective cover on the bench. A little prevention can save you from a lot of polishing later! 😉🍷

Ever noticed a darker border around your stone paving?

It can be associated with factors such as moisture movement, installation materials, surface treatments, or differences in how the material absorbs and dries.

While picture framing can be concerning from an aesthetic perspective, it isn't necessarily a sign of a defective product. Understanding the underlying cause is key to determining whether it's a temporary condition or something that requires further investigation.

What happens when something heavy is dropped on your flooring?

Whether it's a dropped tool on a construction site, outdoor furniture being moved, or everyday accidental impacts, flooring materials need to withstand more than just foot traffic.

At Stone Initiatives, we can perform BS EN 14158 'Determination of Rupture Energy' testing to assess how natural stone responds to sudden impacts. The results provide valuable insight into a material's durability and help determine whether it is suitable for demanding applications such as external paving.

This test method can also be modified for ceramic and porcelain tiles, making it a useful assessment across a wide range of flooring materials, particularily those being installed on pedestal systems.
