Have you heard before that the more windows you have, the lighter and brighter your house will be?
When designing your house it is important to consider ALL the effects that the window area will have.
While it is true that more windows will mean a lighter and brighter home, more window area can also reduce the energy efficiency of your design. We gain solar heat through our windows (a bonus in our cooler climates for passive heating), however we also lose great amounts of heat through windows as well. In fact, heat loss through windows can account for on average almost half the total heat loss from your dwelling.
On average a brick veneer wall has an R value of 2.8 in our climate zone but even the best rating windows will only be around R0.5 so this is like having holes in your walls!
That is why it is so important to get good advice on design and ratios of window area.
