Improving communications on Palm Island 📡

SGA recently completed site works on Palm Island focused on improving industrial communications coverage and reliability across the OT network.

As part of this upgrade, the main repeater antenna was relocated to significantly increase antenna height and improve line-of-sight.

The result was a major performance uplift, with signal strength improving by approximately 8x compared to the previous configuration 📈

Key elements of the works included:
✅ Relocation of repeater antenna to increase elevation
✅ Improved line-of-sight and reduced obstructions
✅ Enhanced RF coverage and communication reliability

Last week, Steve Williams attended the Queensland Mine Electrical Safety Conference (MESC) in Brisbane.

Held over Monday and Tuesday, the conference brought together industry leaders to share insights, case studies, and innovative solutions addressing electrical safety challenges across the mining sector. The sessions highlighted both emerging risks and practical approaches to improving safety outcomes in complex operational environments.

It was also a valuable opportunity to reconnect with many of our mining clients, discuss their current challenges, and gain insights into the latest technologies from more than 70 exhibiting suppliers.

A consistent theme throughout the event was the strong interest in the integration of Welcon Technologies into the SAFEgroup structure, with many conversations focused on the enhanced capabilities and broader service offering now available to clients.

SGA is proud to have delivered a SCADA upgrade for a Far North Queensland council, supporting improved monitoring and control of critical water and wastewater assets during a lengthy and challenging recovery following Cyclone Jasper.

As part of this project, our team implemented SGA’s SCADA 4.0 platform in Geo SCADA, providing a modern and scalable foundation designed to support ongoing operations and future expansion.

Key elements of the upgrade included:
✅ SCADAPack™ 474 RTUs for robust remote telemetry
✅ Trio® QR450 radios to deliver reliable long‑range communications
✅ A standardised SCADA architecture aligned with SGA best practice

Projects like this go beyond technology — they’re about supporting essential services, improving operational visibility, and assisting regional councils as they work through complex recovery conditions.

🚢 SCADA Modernisation – Early Project Insights

We’re currently in the early stages of a SCADA upgrade project for a port and maritime application, focusing on transitioning from a legacy SCADA system to Ignition SCADA.

We will be replacing ageing serial-based RTUs and dataloggers with new Brodersen RTUs, improving reliability, maintainability, and long-term support. These RTUs will interface with critical field instrumentation, including tide sensors, weather stations, and fog/present weather detectors.

A key driver for this project is high availability and redundancy, with particular emphasis on maintaining continuous visibility of tide sensor data, which is safety‑critical for port operations.

We are looking forward to progressing the next phase and providing a robust, future‑ready SCADA platform for critical infrastructure.
