The federal government has announced it will expand the small-scale solar rebate to cover commercial systems up to 1 MW — ten times the current 100 kW limit.
From 1 October 2026, subject to final regulations, mid-sized commercial solar systems are expected to qualify for an upfront rebate of around 20% of installed cost. Until now, businesses installing systems above 100 kW received no upfront rebate at all.
For Tasmanian businesses with high daytime energy use — cold storage, processing, manufacturing, hospitality, agriculture — this changes the numbers considerably.
If you've been weighing up solar for your business, the useful step right now is a site-specific feasibility assessment using your actual energy data. That way you're quote-ready when the new rules commence.
